ITHACA, N.Y. -- Mickey Brodsky went 5-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI to help lead the Cornell baseball team to a doubleheader split against Siena on Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field in Ithaca. The Saints took the opener, 13-2, before Cornell rallied in game two for the 7-2 victory.

Jadd Schmeltzer went 2-for-4 with three RBI on the day, while Brian Billigen was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in addition to picking up the win on the mound in game two.

Schmeltzer got the start in game one and got touched up for a pair of runs on four hits in the first two innings. Siena (15-22) broke the game open with a run in the third and five more in the fourth off of reliever Mike Kazley. Kazley lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, before giving way to Joe Sinopoli. Sinopoli allowed three earned runs in 3.2 innings, finishing out the contest for the Big Red and striking out three Siena batters.

Cornell (11-17) avoided the shutout bid with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. Spencer Souza started the inning by reaching on a throwing error and moved to second on Jerry Vitiello's single through the left side. Phil Mullan was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ryan Michael was hit by a pitch to force in Souza. Brenton Peters then grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Vitiello to score, but Brodsky grounded out to second to end the contest.

Cornell carried the momentum from the seventh inning of game one into game two. Billigen, getting just his first start of the season, allowed a hit in the first but got out of the inning unscathed, then led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk. Peters was hit by a pitch, and Brodsky doubled both players home with a shot to the warning track in left-center. Schmeltzer then singled home Brodsky with a single through the left side as Cornell took a 3-0 lead after one.

Siena cut into the lead with three doubles in the third, scoring a pair of runs, but Cornell restored the three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning. Brodsky was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved to second when Schmeltzer walked. Conor McCabe then singled up the middle, scoring Brodsky, and Souza hit a single to right that was misplayed, allowing Schmeltzer to score from second as Cornell went back up, 5-2.

In the fourth, Cornell added to the lead, with Schmeltzer hitting a two-run single through the right side, scoring Billigen and Brodsky. Rick Marks then relieved Billigen in the top of the fifth and worked a perfect inning, striking out a pair, and David Rochefort came on for the sixth and seventh, allowing one hit and one runner to reach base on error as the Big Red closed out the victory.

The Big Red returns to action this weekend when it plays host to Columbia in a four-game series at Hoy Field. Cornell and Columbia will play a pair of doubleheaders starting at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
