ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team gave No. 10 Syracuse all it could handle, but a late goal by Tegan Brown gave the Orange a 7-6 victory on Wednesday evening at Schoellkopf Field. With the win, Syracuse improves to 10-4 overall, while the Big Red falls to 4-8 on the season.
The Cornell defense did a fantastic job all night against a high-powered SU offense that entered the game scoring 14 goals per contest, holding its Central New York rival to half of its average. Two of its superstars, Tee Ladouceur (30 goals, 31 assists) and Halley Quillinan (31 goals, seven assists), were held scoreless and Christina Dove, who entered the game averaging nearly five points per game, was held to a pair of scores.
The Big Red held a 6-5 edge with less than 11 minutes to play after All-America candidate
Jessi Steinberg capitalized on a 1-on-1 move to put Cornell up, but Dove tied it up with 8:06 left and Brown then scored what proved to be the game-winner just 44 seconds later.
Cornell made the game interesting late, getting the ball back on an outstanding check by Steinberg on Syracuse goalkeeper Liz Hogan with under a minute to play to give the Big Red one last chance.
Libby Johnson was able to get a shot off that went wide with seven seconds left, and Steinberg's effort at the buzzer was saved, Hogan's six stop of the night.

Johnson ended the night with two goals and an assist, while Stienberg, O'Connor,
Katie Kirk and
Lauren Halpern also tallied goals.
Jackie DePetris led SU with two goals and an assist, while Michelle Tumolo had a goal and two helpers. Both Dove and Brown scored twice of the home team.
Cornell will look to clinch a spot in the Ivy League championship playoffs when it meets Yale in the final home game for the Big Red's six seniors on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
