ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 8 Cornell men's lacrosse team nearly erased a five-goal deficit with a four-goal fourth quarter, but couldn't come all the way back as Brown upset the Big Red, 13-10, this afternoon on Schoellkopf Field. With the win, the Bears improve to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League, while Cornell falls to 8-4 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.

“I think Brown did a very good of controlling the game,” said head coach Jeff Tambroni. “They really slowed it down and held possession for long stretches of time. In the fourth quarter, I feel like we did a better job and were able to push the tempo, but it was obviously too little, too late.”

Rob Pannell was the Big Red's only multi-point scored on the day with four goals and two assists. Ryan Hurley, Chris Ritchie, Roy Lang, Jack Dudley, Austin Boykin and Ross Gillum all tallied one goal each, while David Lau and Jon Thompson both added one assist.

Defensively, Cornell got a solid day from Pierce Derkac, who led the team with eight ground balls and caused two turnovers. Jason Noble and Andrew MacDonald each forced two turnovers as well in front of goalie AJ Fiore, who finished the day with nine saves.

Brown got a team-high five points form Thomas Muldoon (three goals, two assists) and three goals from Parker Brown, while Collins Carey handed out three assists. David Hawley (two goals) and Reade Seligmann (one goal, one assist) had multi-point games for the Bears.

Matt Chriss stopped 13 shots, including seven in the critical fourth quarter, to earn the win.

Cornell held the slight edge in shots (38-34) and ground balls (36-26), and forced 19 Brown turnovers, while turning the ball over just 14 times, but were hurt in at the face-off circle, where the Bears won 15-27 restarts.

Both teams cleared the ball efficiently, each turning the ball over twice, and both registered man-up goals with Brown going 2-of-3 and Cornell scoring on 1-of-2 attempts.

Despites losing all seven face-offs in the first quarter and having very little possession time, the Big Red still managed to go up, 4-2, thanks to goals from Lang, Pannell, Dudley and Ritchie.

The Bears responded in the second quarter with three unanswered goals from three different players to take the one goal lead, 5-4, at the 8:43 mark. Back-to-back goals from Pannell returned the lead to Cornell, but Hawley scored twice in the final two minutes of the quarter to give the visitors the 7-6 lead at the intermission.

Brown dominated the third half, scoring four times and holding the Big Red without a goal to take a commanding 11-6 lead that it would not relinquish.

The Big Red turned up the offensive pressure in the final stanza, scoring the first three goals to pull within two, 11-9 with just over seven minutes to play. During the run, Pannell had a hand in all three tallies, scoring twice and assisting on the other two.

That was as close as it would get, however, as Brown outscored the home team, 2-1 down the stretch to account for the 13-10 final.

Cornell plays its final game of the regular season next weekend as it travels to New Jersey to take on No. 6/5 Princeton at the Class of '52 Stadium on Saturday, May 1 at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
