ITHACA, N.Y. --
Mickey Brodsky hit the walk-off home run in the opener to cap a 4-for-8 day and
Tony Bertucci notched 10 strikeouts on Senior Day as the Cornell baseball team picked up a sweep of Princeton on Friday at Hoy Field in Ithaca. The Big Red needed extra innings to defeat the Tigers in the opener, courtesty of Brodsky's two-run blast to right-center, but Bertucci shut down Princeton in the nightcap as Cornell improved to 16-19 on the year and 8-10 in Ivy League play.
Brodsky scored three runs and drove in a pair on the day, while
Frank Hager was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two driven in.
Nate David was 3-for-7 with a pair of runs scored, two RBI and one home run.
David Rochefort got the win in relief in game one, coming on for starter
Corey Pappel, who worked 7.1 innings of one-run ball, striking out six. Rochefort got the final two outs of the eighth, then worked a scoreless ninth to set up the stage for Brodsky's heroics. In game two, Bertucci worked eight strong innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, one unearned, in striking out 10. Rochefort came on for the ninth and allowed just his second earned run of the season, but Princeton could not cut the gap any closer.
In the opener, Cornell got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second off of Princeton starter Dan Barnes.
Frank Hager and
Nate David hit back-to-back singles to open the inning and picked up a stolen base of third and second, respectively. A wild pitch then brought Hager home from third, and
Jerry Vitiello singled home David as Cornell grabbed the early lead.
Princeton would respond soon after, as Noel Gonzales-Luna hit a solo home run to open up the third, cutting the lead to 2-1, and Tom Boggiano came through with an RBI ground out to score Andrew Whitner, knotting the game at two.
From there, it was all pitching, as Barnes, after the second inning, retired 12 Cornell batters in a row until
Matt Langseth singled in the sixth. He would wind up stranded on third, though, as Cornell could not push the go-ahead run across. Similarly, for Princeton's offense, Pappel retired 10 of the next 11 batters, and got the 11th out on a stolen base attempt in the sixth.
In the seventh, Princeton's John Mishu led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out fly out to deep right. Rochefort then came on and retired the next two batters on strikes to end the Princeton threat. Cornell, though, couldn't get anything going against Barnes, as the Princeton hurler retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the ninth, Rochefort tightroped his way through danger, allowing a pair of singles to put runners on the corners with two out, but got a fly-ball out from Gonzales-Luna to keep the score tied at two. Kevin Link came on in relief of Barnes and would only face two batters in the bottom of the ninth, allowing a single to Langseth before Brodsky cracked his first home run of the season to right-center.
In game two, it was the combo of Brodsky and Hager that got the Big Red on the board in the first inning. Brodsky hit a two-out single and came around to score on Hager's double as Cornell took the early lead.
Bertucci was strong from the beginning, sending down the first eight Princeton batters, including three strikeouts and four groundouts to second. Boggiano picked up the first Princeton hit and would wind up coming around to score on a single and two-base error by Gonzales-Luna, but Bertucci got Mishu out on strikes to end the Tiger threat.
Cornell regained the lead in the fourth when David hit his fifth home run of the season, but Princeton responded again in the fifth inning, as Matt Connor responded with a home run of his own. The Big Red finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs, and again, Brodsky was in the thick of the action.
Brodsky led off the inning with a single and scored on Hager's triple, and Hager came in when
Nate David followed with a single of his own. Princeton starter David Palms got David out trying to steal, and then picked up a pair of groundouts to third to end the inning, but not before the Big Red claimed a 4-2 lead.
Marshall Yanzick stretched the lead to 7-2 in the eighth with his second home run of the year, a three-run blast that scored Hager and
Kyle Groth. Rochefort came on to work the ninth in relief of Bertucci, and allowed an RBI double to Connor, but retired the next two batters with runners standing on second and third to end the contest.
Cornell will close out Ivy League play on Sunday with another doubleheader against Princeton, this time taking place in Princeton, N.J. The Big Red will then finish the season with a single-game against cross-town foe Ithaca College on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hoy Field.
