Hot Shooting Second Half Pushes Princeton Past Women’s Basketball

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's basketball team trailed Princeton by just two points at the intermission, but the Tigers shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and 55 percent from 3-point range in the second half to take the 65-43 victory this evening in Jadwin Gym.

Cornell (5-17, 2-6 Ivy) was led by Clare Fitzpatrick with 16 points on a 7-of-18 performance from the floor to go along with five rebounds. Taylor Flynn chipped in eight points, while Allyson DiMagno added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Maka Anyanwu also had seven rebounds for the Big Red.

Princeton (17-4, 6-1 Ivy) had three players in double figures, led by Devona Allgood's career-high 22 points and game-high eight rebounds. Addie Micir and Lauren Edwards added 14 and 13 points apiece, respectively.

The Tigers outrebounded Cornell, 35-31, and forced 16 Big Red turnovers with nine steals, while turning the ball over just 12 times.

Cornell shot just 30 percent from the floor in the first half but raised that to 37.5 percent in the second half to finish at 34 percent for the game. The Big Red also connected on 30 percent overall from 3-point range.

Princeton, which opened the game at 37 percent from the floor, finished the night at 48 percent thanks to their hot shooting in the final 20 minutes.

The home team jumped out to a 12-point lead, going up 17-5 at the 12:13 mark, but Cornell roared back with 10 straight points, thanks in large part to five points from Flynn, to make it a two-point game with 7:54 to play in the half.

A jumper by Allgood put the Tigers back up by four points and Princeton eventually went up 23-17 on a layup from Edwards, but back-to-back baskets by Shelby Lyman and Fitzpatrick made it a 23-21 game at the intermission.

Allgood scored the first four points of the second half to put the home team back up by six points. A trey by Stephanie Long ended the Tigers run and the teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before nine unanswered points put Princeton up, 42-28, with 9:11 to play in the game.

The Tigers eventually pushed their lead to 24 points with just over three minutes remaining and rolled to the 64-43 victory.

Cornell remains on the road next weekend as it travels to Harvard and Dartmouth on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19, respectively. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7 p.m.
