ITHACA, N.Y. – A slow start doomed the Big Red women's basketball team as Brown lead wire-to-wire to take the 66-53 victory this evening at Newman Arena. With the loss, Cornell fell to 5-15 (2-4 Ivy) on the season, while the Bears improved to 5-14 (1-4 Ivy).

Clare Fitzpatrick led all scorers with a season-high 23 points on an 8-for-14 performance from the floor and a 7-for-9 night at the free throw line. The sophomore forward also finished with seven rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist. No other Big Red player reached double-digits, but Kristina Danielak, Stephanie Long, Taylor Flynn and Allie Munson all finished with six points apiece, while Allyson Munson pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Three Brown players scored double-digits with Hannah Passafuime finishing with 15 points, while Lauren Clarke and Lindsay Nickel had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Passafuime also had a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.

For the second straight night, Cornell held the edge in rebounds, 40-34, but turned the ball over 20 times which resulted in 22 points for Brown. The Bears were forced into 14 turnovers with seven steals by the Big Red.

Cornell suffered from poor shooting early on, connecting on just 29 percent (7-for-24) from the field and the team did not hit a 3-point in the first half, but rebounded in the second stanza to finish at 37.5 percent (21-of-56) for the game.

Brown finished at well above its season average, connecting on 43.5 percent (20-of-46) overall and 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc.

The Bears capitalized on the Big Red's shooting woes and jumped out to an early 10-0 lead at the 15:21 mark. Back-to-back layups from Fitzpatrick closed the gap to six points, but that was as close as it would get as Brown continued its hot shooting to go into the intermission with the 33-17 lead.

Brown extended its lead to 22 points midway through the second half on a 3-pointer by Nickel but Cornell turned up the defensive pressure and a layup from Fitzpatrick with 8:51 to play made it a 48-34 game.

Another small run put the Bears back up by 18 points, 54-36, with 5:09 to play, but a jumper by Danielak, followed by a trey from Long pulled the Big Red within 13 points at the 3:53 mark.

Cornell eventually cut the lead to 11 points, but that was as close as it would get down the stretch as Brown took the victory.

The Big Red is back in action next weekend as it travels to Penn and Princeton on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12, respectively.
