ITHACA, N.Y. – With an 16 to 1 advantage in shots on goal through the first period, it seemed only a matter of time until the No. 2 Cornell women's hockey team broke through against Princeton on Friday at Lynah Rink.
In the second period, those goals started coming. Cornell put three past Tigers goalie Kimberly Newell in the period,
Jillian Saulnier had a three-point afternoon and Cornell cruised to a 4-0 victory.
The Big Red (5-1, 3-0 ECAC Hockey) were missing
Brianne Jenner, as she left Ithaca to play in the 4 Nations Cup with Team Canada. But that didn't stop the team from putting up four goals against Princeton (2-3, 0-3), it's highest total against the Tigers in five games. Junior assistant captain
Alyssa Gagliardi helped in the offensive zone, moving up from her normal position as a defenseman earning two assists to help Cornell get its seventh consecutive win over the Tigers.
The Big Red played about as dominating a first period as possible, taking 16 shots on goal and completely controlling the puck. The Tigers managed just one shot in a slow period for Slebodnick.
Cornell got its first goal early into the game with just 1:01 gone from the clock.
Hayleigh Cudmore took a shot from the right point to get things started. The puck was deflected near the top of the crease in the middle of its flight by a Princeton player. Saulnier picked the puck up there, whirled around and beat Newell for the 1-0 lead and her 25th career goal. The second assist, given to Cudmore, was her 30th point in a Big Red uniform.
In the second period, the Big Red was able to take advantage of its huge lead in shots and take an even bigger lead on the scoreboard. Saulnier got her second goal of the game when she took the puck up the right wing from Zorn, cut in front of the net to get around a defender and beat Newell far side.
The Big Red's third strike came just after a power play ended. Gagliardi took a shot from the left point, and it bounced off
Taylor Woods in front of the net. The puck squirted free to Poudrier, playing in her first career game, and her aim was true into the gaping net to make it 3-0.
Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Richardson got her first career goal less than a minute later when
Laura Fortino found her across the blue line. With plenty of traffic obscuring Newell's vision, Richardson wound up for a slap shot and went high to the left to put Cornell ahead 4-0.
Slebodnick made seven saves in the game before leaving midway through the second period due to injury. Freshman
Stefannie Moak, playing her first career minutes, stepped in admirably for Slebodnick and made three saves to secure Cornell's second shutout of the season.
When the dust had settled, the Big Red outshot the Tigers 45-10 and were a perfect 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
The game was delayed for 20 minutes early in the third period as a Princeton player had to leave the game due to injury.
Cornell is back in action Saturday afternoon when it takes on Quinnipiac and looks to extend its winning streak to five at 3 p.m.
