Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – One night after suffering a close loss, the No. 3 Big Red women's hockey team rebounded with a victory at St. Lawrence on Saturday evening thanks to a huge shot-blocking effort, excellent penalty killing and timely goals.
Jessica Campbell had the eventual game winner shortly after escaping the penalty box in the third period, the Big Red killed off eight other penalties, and blocked 18 shots on its way to a 4-2 victory over the Saints in Appleton Arena.
Junior forward
Brianne Jenner had three blocked shots, a goal and an assist on an empty netter, while senior defenseman
Laura Fortino had a team-high four blocked shots.
Jillian Saulnier and
Lauriane Rougeau each had two blocked shots as well.
Lauren Slebodnick had 22 saves for the victory.
Cornell (10-3, 8-2 ECAC Hockey) won its second straight game over St. Lawrence (8-7-1, 6-2) after defeating the Saints in Lynah Rink 5-1 in October.
Saturday's contest was much closer.
For the first time in four games, the Big Red got the first goal on the board thanks to a perfect passing sequence on the power play. Every player on the ice touched the puck for the Big Red, but Jenner got it last and found space on the left side of goalie Carmen MacDonald for the 1-0 lead. The passes started from the right side with Saulnier, and she fed
Kelly Murray at the left point. Murray one-touched the puck down low to Jenner, and she did not miss from that distance to put the Big Red ahead 8:57 in.
Cornell was gifted its second goal thanks to a bad turnover by Mel Desrochers. The Saints defenseman tried to play the puck out of the zone, but she misplayed it and lost it to
Anna Zorn. Zorn was right in the middle of the slot, and she ripped a shot over the glove of MacDonald for her third goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.
The Saints cut the lead in half with just 31 seconds left in the period on the power play. Jenner took a cross checking penalty, and St. Lawrence's Rylee Smith made Cornell pay with a bad-angle shot that got behind Slebodnick. Smith had the puck behind the goal line on the right side of the net, and a centering pass somehow wound up behind Slebodnick.
The second period was reminiscent of Friday night's game with plenty of penalties called against both teams. Cornell had to kill of 20 seconds of five-on-three during the period and longer amounts of four-on-three but emerged unscathed. Fortino, Alyssa Gaglardi and
Taylor Woods blocked multiple blue-line attempts by the Saints while on the kill, helping to keep Slebodnick from needing to make saves.
The team's third goal came thanks to a penalty.
Jessica Campbell, in the box for an interference call, escaped right after Fortino blocked a shot in front of Slebodnick. The puck bounced out to Rougeau, who completed a saucer pass to
Erin Barley-Maloney. Barley-Maloney fed Campbell perfectly, and the speedy junior out-skated Desrochers and beat MacDonald high to extend the lead to 3-1.
St. Lawrence cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the third period thanks to nifty passing from behind the net by Rylee Smith. She found a wide open Abbey McRae on the right side of the net uncovered, and McRae beat Slebnodnick to make it a one-goal game.
Cornell buckled down on defense in the last 10 minutes, though, killing off a boarding penalty by
Cassandra Poudrier later in the period as well as a hooking penalty by Fortino with 1:08 left. St. Lawrence had a six-on-four for a decent chunk of time, but Campbell cleared the zone, passed it to Jenner, and Jenner found Barley-Maloney in the middle of the offensive zone for the game-icing empty netter.
The Big Red now has more than a full month off as it will not play another game until the new year. Those next games, though, will be difficult tests on the road against two top-10 teams: Northeastern on Jan. 12 and Boston College on Jan. 13.
