Kyle Dake was named the utstanding Wrestler at the Grapple at the Garden after defeating No. 13 Zach Toal of Missouri and muscling past No. 3 Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State. Missouri defeated the Big Red, 21-15 in the first dual of the day. No. 2 Oklahoma State inched past Cornell with bonus points in the second match, 21-16. Returning NCAA champion
Steve Bosak returned to the Cornell lineup for the first time this season and picked up two wins over ranked wrestlers.
College wrestling invaded Madison Square Garden for the first time in the arena's 133 year storied history. The event included 14 Division I teams competing in 12 dual meets. Thousands of fans filled the lower bowl of the Garden, and numerous wrestling greats, UFC fighters and WWE competitors were interviewed on the floor throughout the event. The teams were introduced with strobe lights and pyrotechnics giving the event an unprecedented atmosphere. The Big Red wrestlers even used the Knicks' locker room.
In the first match of the day, No, 10
Nahshon Garrett took on No. 4 Alan Waters at 125 pounds. The two started the period heavy on the head with both wrestlers pushing the action. At 1:44 Garrett was warned for stalling at the edge of the mat. Waters was able to get the first takedown shortly after the stall warning and proceeded to tilt Garrett for three nearfall points. Waters finished the second on top. The Missouri wrestler started on the bottom to begin the second, and Garrett maintained control on top for the first minute of the match. With just four seconds left in the period, Waters managed a double leg to secure a second takedown bringing the match score to 8-0 going into the third. Garrett started the third period on bottom, and Waters maintained a tough ride preventing the Cornell wrestler from escaping for most of the period and acquiring 1:39 seconds of riding time. Garrett managed the escape with just 30 seconds remaining. With just 10 seconds remaining, he was able to nab a takedown and was quickly looking for back points. Garret was awarded two nearfall points as time ran out. Waters won an 8-5 decision.
At 133 pounds, No 8
Nick Arujau faced No. 6 Nathan McCormick. The Missouri wrestler was the first to shoot, but Arujau defended. McCormick managed a takedown with quick escape from the Cornell wrestler. Another takedown for McCormick with just 20 seconds remaining brought the score to 4-1 to end the first. Arujau started down to begin the second where McCormick showed his ability to ride tough and secure sufficient riding time. Just before time ran out in the second, Arujau was warned for stalling. The Missouri wrestler picked down in the third and managed two backpoints with a tilt. At the edge of the mat, McCormick then managed an escape. A countered shot from Arujau resulted in a takedown for the Missouri wrestler with less than a minute remaining. The action was stopped for a potentially dangerous move from the Missouri wrestle and back at center mat, McCormick managed two more backpoints to take the score to 11-3 with riding time to win the match. Missouri led in the team score, 7-0.
No. 10
Mike Nevinger took on Nicholas Hucke at 141 pounds. Hucke and Nevinger scrambled for 20 seconds in the first before Hucke got the takedown. He then earned three nearfall points followed by two back points before Nevinger managed an escape. Hucke chose neutral to begin the second and earned a takedown before Hucke got a quick escape and then a takedown over Nevinger. The Cornell wrestler responded with another takedown. Nevinger chose top to start the third. Hucke got the several 30 seconds into the final period to take the 9-6 lead before Nevinger got an escape. A stalemate brought the wrestlers back to center before the Missouri wrestler claimed the match 9-7

At 149 pounds, No. 20
Chris Villalonga squared off against No. 17 Drake Houdashelt. After a scoreless first period, Villalonga escaped from his opening down position. Houdashelt chose to start the third down. Thirty seconds, the Missouri wrestler escape, and the bout was deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation. Neither wrestler scored in sudden victory. Villalonga rode his opponent out for the entire first tiebreaker. With an escape with 14 seconds left, Villalonga won a 2-1 decision.
At 157 pounds,
Jesse Shanaman returned to the Cornell lineup. Shanaman got on the board first with a takedown, but Bradley would escape. Bradley escaped early to start the second, but not before Shanaman accumulated 1:07 in riding time. Shanaman chose neutral to start the third. Neither wrestler scored and with riding time, Shanaman won a 3-2 decision.
At 165 pounds, Dake and Toal were scoreless after the first period. Dake chose to start the period down and immediately reversed his opponent Dake road Toal out for the remainder of the period. Toal chose to start the third down, but was unable to escape. The Missouri wrestler gave up two stalling points, and with riding time, Dake won a 5-0 decision. In the team race, Missouri led, 10-9.
Marshall Peppelman faced Todd Porter at 174 pounds. The two were scoreless after the first period. Porter had a single leg and finished a takedown in the second period. After an exciting scramble, Peppelman reversed his opponent. Porter notched the escape to bring the score to 4-2, in favor of the Mizzou wrestler. Peppelman chose down to start the third and escaped halfway through the period. Peppelman tried to score late in the bout but was unable to notch a takedown and lost a 4-3 decision.
No. 2 ranked Bosak opened his senior campaign against No. 8 Mike Larson. Bosak dominated the action early in the bout and the Mizzou wrestler was warned for stalling. Bosak notched a takedown at the edge of the mat and racked up 2:10 in riding time before the period was over. The Big Red captain escaped from his starting down position in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Larson chose neutral in the third and with riding time, won a 4-0 decision.
Sophomore
Jace Bennett wrestled for Cornell against No. 12 Brent Haynes. Bennett notched the first takedown and added two back points in the second. Haynes chose down to start the second and reversed Bennett. Haynes caught Bennett and secured the fall in 4:42.
At heavyweight, senior
Stryker Lane faced No. 2 Dom Bradley. Bradley notched a takedown in the first period and road the Big Red wrestler out until the end of the period. Lane chose down to start the second period, but was unable to escape the Mizzou wrestler's clutches. Bradley reversed Lane from his starting down position in the third, but Lane would escape. Bradley added one more takedown to win a 6-1 decision.
Missouri won the dual, 22-15.
Cornell vs. Oklahoma State
In the Big Red's dual against No. 2 Oklahoma State, each team won five matches, but the Cowboys came out on top with bonus points.
At 125 pounds, No. 10 ranked Garrett took on Eddie Kilmara. Midway through the first Garrett got on the board with a takedown and added three back points. Kilmara would escape before the period was over. The Oklahoma State wrestler escaped from his opening down position midway through the second period. Garrett escaped from his down position in the third and added a double leg takedown. Garrett was looking for the major decision, but Kilmara evaded him. With 1:47 in riding time, Garrett won a 9-3 decision. The Big Red rookie is 18-1 for the season.
At 133 pounds, No. 8 Arujau faced No. 7 Jon Morrison. Morrison notched a takedown to score first for the Cowboys. Morrison chose to start the second down. Arujau tried for a tilt, but was just slightly away from earning back points. With 30 seconds remaining, Morrison escaped. Arujau chose to start the second at neutral. Morrison added a takedown midway through the period to win a 5-0 decision.
No. 10 Nevinger squared off against Julian Feikert at 141 pounds. Feifert notched two takedown in the first from which Nevinger escaped. Feikert chose neutral and Nevinger got a takedown at the edge of the mat. The Big Red junior added three back points before the end of the period. Nevinger chose to start the third down and Feikert tilted Nevinger for two nearfall points. Feikert let Nevinger up for an escape, and Nevinger responded with a takedown of his own. Nevinger added a two-point nearfall and a three-point nearfall to win a 16-6 major decision with riding time.
At 149 pounds, No. 20 Villalonga wrestled against No. 1 Jordan Oliver. Oliver notched two takedowns in the first period. Villalonga escaped from his opening down position in the second. Oliver added another takedown before the period was over. Oliver chose neutral to start the third. With riding time and two more takedown, Oliver won an 11-3 major decision.
At 157 pounds, Shanaman faced No. 9 Alex Dieringer. Dieringer notched a takedown midway through the period and road the Big Red wrestler out for the remainder. Dieringer escaped from his starting down position in the second and added a double leg takedown . Shanaman escaped from his opening down position. Dieringer would add to more takedowns to win a 10-2 major decision.
In the most highly anticipated match of the night, Dake faced No. 3 Tyler Caldwell at 165 pounds. The three-time NCAA champion and Cowboy wrestler were scoreless after the first period. Dake chose down to start the second and immediately reversed Caldwell. Caldwell worked to his feet a few times, but Dake muscled him to the ground with huge mat returns. Caldwell chose to start the third down. Dake was awarded another point when Caldwell was called for an illegal hold for trying to bend Dake's fingers back. With 32 seconds left in the bout, Caldwell escaped. With 3:13 in riding time, Dake won a 4-1 decision. Dake has now already beaten the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked wrestlers this season at his new weight class.
At 174 pounds, freshmen
Duke Pickett faced No. 1 Chris Perry. Perry grabbed a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Perry had a quick escape to start the second and added a takedown before the period was over. Pickett escaped from his opening down position in the third. Perry grabbed another takedown and won by fall in 5:54.
No. 2 Bosak and No. 13 Chris Chionuma were scoreless after the first period at 184 pounds. Chionuma chose down to start the second and got the escape. Bosak quickly escaped from his opening down position in the third. Bosak notched a takedown, but Chionuma reversed him. Bosak escaped and with riding time won a 5-3 decision.
Bennett took on Zach White at 197 pounds. Bennett held a 2-0 lead after a takedown 30 second into the first. White chose down to start the second. Bennett added two back points and racked up 4:39 in riding time. Bennett got an early escape to start the third. He added another takedown and two back points. White escaped and added a takedown to avoid a major decision. Bennett won, 10-3.
At heavyweight, Lane faced No. 3 Alan Gelogaev. Gelogaev held a 6-1 lead after the first with two takedowns and two back points. Lane escaped from his opening down position in the second. The Cowboy wrestler added two more takedowns. Gelogaev rapidly escaped from his opening down position in the third. With another takedown and riding time, he won a 13-3 major decision.
Cornell will break for the winter holidays and will resume action on Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
