NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Spencer Lane scored a career-high 18 points for Cornell to lead four double figure scorers, but Yale made 16 3-pointers, including 10 in the first half, to cruise to an 86-73 victory on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red dropped to 9-11 (3-3 Ivy), while the Bulldogs improved to 13-8 (5-2 Ivy).

Yale connected early and often from downtown, hitting on 16-of-30 shots from beyond the arc to take a 16-point lead into halftime, then held off a 48-point second half Cornell outburst to earn the victory. The Big Red shot 53 percent from the floor and made 4-of-7 from 3-point range overall, but could never make a run to get back in the contest after falling behind by double figures seven minutes into the contest.

Joining Lane in double figures for the Big Red was Clare Fitzpatrick with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, as well as Taylor Flynn with 13 and Allyson DiMagno with 10 points and six boards. Maka Anyanwu chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Yale, meanwhile, assisted on 24 of its 30 baskets and used consistent ball movement to create open shots on the perimeter against the Big Red's zone. Megan Vasquez posted a game-high 25 points, while both Janna Graf and Allie Messimer hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the victory. Aarica West notched 10 assists in the victory.

West scored her only points of the night to beat the shot clock buzzer on the first possession of the game, knocking out a 3-pointer in a sign of things to come. Vazquez made it 6-2 after nailing the second shot of the game by Yale just 1:10 in. The rain of 3-pointers would continue, with the Bulldogs extending the lead to 16 with consecutive treys to end the half, one by Sarah Halejian and another by Graf to enter halftime leading 41-25.

The Big Red got within 12 twice after the break, the last when Lane hit two free throw three minutes into the second half to make it 47-35. That would be as close as the visitors would get, with Yale pushing the lead to as many as 23 points with eight minutes to play before Cornell was able to cut into the final deficit.

Cornell will look for the road split when it visits Brown on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
