ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's gymnastics team got wins on bars from Lexi Schupp and beam from
Melanie Standridge, but a tough day overall on floor put the Big Red in second place at the 2012 Big Red Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Gymnasium. The Big Red finished with a team score of 189.525, behind Southern Connecticut (190.050), but ahead of Ithaca College (187.250) and West Chester (185.150).
Schupp was the top competitor on bars with a 9.700, just ahead of Kirby Pallis of Southern Connecticut, who posted a 9.675.
Sarah Wetter finished fifth (9.500) and
Melanie Jorgensen and Nicolette Shofner tied for sixth (9.450). Standridge, meanwhile, recovered from falls on beam in consecutive weeks to tally a tremendous 9.825 score to outdistance teammates
McKenna Archer (9.775) and Schupp (9.650) as part of a 1-2-3 sweep for Big Red gymnasts in the event.
Archer was Cornell's top finisher on vault with a 9.750, good for second place, while
Tiffany Chen was the top scorer on floor with a 9.625, good for a sixth-place tie.
Cornell, which has posted a 188.000 or better in every meet, stumbled on floor and needed to count two falls, just enough for Southern Connecticut to win the meet. The Big Red had the highest team score on both vault (47.475) and beam (48.050).
The Big Red returns to action at the Towson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 4 p.m.
