FAIRFAX, Va. -- For the third straight day to open the season, the Cornell softball team split a pair of games. This time, the Big Red jumped out early on Hartford in a 8-2 victory before falling to George Mason 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Invitational. Cornell's record remains even at 3-3.
In the opener, Cornell exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to make a winner out of
Brittany Sutton, giving the freshman her first collegiate win. Sutton scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run in picking up the victory. The big blow came from senior
Erin Keene, who blasted a grand slam with two outs in the seventh after Cornell rallied from a 2-1 deficit.
Lauren Bucolo had the go-ahead two-run single to set up Keene's bomb.
The bats went silent in game two, collecting just four hits (all singles), though the Big Red threatened in the seventh. After a single by
Erin Belles,
Christina Villalon reached on an error to put runners on first and second with no outs. Two outs later,
JJ Briggs singled to right, but Belles was caught trying to get back to third to end the game.
The loss ruined a solid outing by sophomore pitched
Alyson Onyon, who struck out six and allowed just six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Mason scored a run in the third and an insurance run in the sixth, the first on a two-out single and the second on a sacrifice fly.
