Marshall Yanzick went 4-for-5 with three RBI to extend his hitting streak to 19 games, and sophomore
Connor Kaufmann had a solid start to help the baseball team defeat Longwood, 5-1, on Thursday evening. It was the Big Red's 10th victory of the season, matching its win total from all of 2011.
Bouncing back from a rough start which let to his first loss of the season, Kaufmann worked into the sixth inning while retiring 10 straight. He then issued his only walk of the day with one out in the sixth, and the runner came around to score on a two-out double. Junior LHP T.J. Parthemer came on in relief in his season debut and ended the threat, then was near flawless in two more innings of work. Freshman RHP
Kellen Urbon then wrapped up the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, fanning two.
The Big Red was 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts, with three of them leading to runs. The first was in the third, when Cornell started the scoring. Junior
Brenton Peters hit a leadoff single to right, then stole second. Yanzick drove him in with a single to center. Peters was 3-for-4 on the day.
The lead doubled in the fifth with senior
Brian Billigen hitting a one-out single to right before stealing second. He advanced to third on a groundout, then scored on a wild pitch. Billigen leads the team in batting average (.433), runs (16), RBI (20) and stolen bases (six).
The Big Red continued to use small ball to further its lead in the sixth. Junior catcher
Chris Burke led off with a single, then freshman outfielder
JD Whetsel walked. Peters dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position, and Yanzick delivered a two-run single down the right-field line.
Of Cornell's 15 hits on the day, 14 were singles. The only extra-base hit came from freshman
Matt Hall, whose double in the ninth scored senior
Frank Hager.
