Attack Dominates As Men's Lacrosse Tops Army, 18-7

ITHACA, N.Y. -- All three starting attackmen were credited with six points as Cornell ran away for an 18-7 win over Army on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red remained unbeaten (2-0), while the Black Knights fell to 2-3 on the year.

Steve Mock scores all five of his goals in the second quarter as the Big Red raced out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back. He added an assist, while Rob Pannell scored one goal and notched five assists. Freshman Matt Donovan was impressive in his second collegiate game with four goals and two assists in the victory. In all, 12 different players were credited with at least one point and 11 scored a goal. Also collecting multi-point games were Max Van Bourgondien (one goal, two assists) and Scott Austin (one goal, one assist).

The Big Red dominated at the face-off "x", particularly in the decisive first half. Doug Tesoriero won 17-of-26 re-starts with 11 ground balls, while the wing play was also outstanding, winning numerous 50-50 opportunities. One of those wings, Jason Noble, was dominant in the midfield with an assist, nine ground ball wins and six caused turnovers. In goal, Andrew West went the distance and made seven saves against the seven goals allowed.

Garrett Thul notched three goals to lead the Black Knights, with all three coming in the game's first 20 minutes. He got the visitors on the board five minutes into the contest ot hand Army the early lead. Devin Lynch had two goals and John Glesener notched a goal and an assist. Zach Palmieri played the first 52 minutes between the pipes, making 12 saves and allowing 16 goals before giving way to Sam Somers. Derek Sipperly won 10 face-offs and collected a team-high five ground balls.

Cornell dominated on the ground, posting a 43-17 edge in ground balls, including 23-9 in the first half. In high winds, both teams had some struggles clearing the ball, with the big Red going 14-of-17 and Army turning it over four times on 12 opportunities.

Army scored first less than five minutes in, but that was the high point for the Black Knights. Less than a minute later, Pannell scored to begin a 6-1 run that put the Big Red in control. Dominance at the face-off circle early set the tone, as Tesoriero went 6-for-7 in the first quarter and 10-of-11 overall to start the game.

Thul kept Army in the game early, with his third straight goal for the Black Knights, followed by a scored by Alex Van Krevel early in the second cut Cornell's lead to 6-4. The answer came from Mock and Pannell. The senior found the junior to start another big Big Red run as the home team scored seven of the next eight goals to blow the game wide open. Mock scored his third, fourth and fifth goals of the second quarter to end the half with an 11-5 lead.

A pair of Army penalties late in the second and into the third were costly, as Cornell scored twice. Pannell assisted in three straight scored and Roy Lang scored his first of the season to extend the Big Red edge to 13-5. Devin Lynch scored consecutively for Army, but Pannell again worked his magic. As the quarter ended, the senior whirled behind the cage and found Connor English for a quick-stick goal with less than a second left on the clock to all put seal the win, sending Cornell into the fourth leading 14-7.

The Black Knights went scoreless over the final 17:09 as the Big Red posted four goals with no response from Army. Matt Donovan scored to open the period as both teams emptied their benches for much of the fourth quarter.

Cornell returns to action on Tuesday, March 6 at 4 p.m. when it meets Canisius at Schoellkopf Field.
