ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team too care of business to reach its 29th national championship match with a 20-12 win over Cal Poly on Friday afternoon at Oxley Equestrian Center. It will now prepare to play for its 14th national title, including its second straight, when it meets Virginia on Sunday, April 22 at 10 a.m.
Cornell led wire-to-wire to improve to 13-5 on the year and will meet a Virginia team that has already handed the Big Red a pair of losses this season. The Cavaliers will be looking to avenge last season's 18-10 Big Red victory at Oxley that gave Cornell its 13th national crown in program history.
Cornell faced the west regional champion Cal Poly with a lineup of
Amanda Stern,
Ali Hoffman and
Kailey Eldredge, with the Mustangs eyeing their first appearance in the title match. The Big Red started off by scoring the first three goals, taking a lead they never relinquish.
Led by Eldredge's four goals, Cornell led 6-3 after the first chukker. Cal Poly's physical play kept it close in second. Eldredge, the daughter of head coach Dave Eldredge, repeated her first period efforts in the second as the Big Red would edge out slightly to take a 10-6 haltime lead. The third was very similar to the second with Cornell again increasing its lead by one to 14-9 after three chukkers. The fourth saw Cornell finally start to pull away with the Big Red scoring six of the first seven goals to take a 20-10 lead with 11 seconds remaining. Cal Poly tallied its second 2-pointer in the final seconds to bring the final score to 20-12. Eldredge tallied a game-high 12 goals, while Hoffman had three, Stern scored two to go along with three penalty goals.
