PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton jumped out on Cornell quickly and surged to a 14-9 victory over the Big Red on its Senior Night, capturing the outright Ivy League title in the process. Cornell slipped to 9-3 (4-2 Ivy), while the Tigers moved to 10-3 (6-0 Ivy).
With the win, Princeton will host the 2012 Ivy League tournament beginning on Friday, May 4 at Class of 1952 Stadium. Cornell will be the No. 2 seed and will play Yale at 5 p.m., while the the Tigers will play No. 4 Brown at 8 p.m. THe championship game will be played on Sunday, May 6 at noon.
Matt Donovan was one of the bright spots for the Big Red, scoring four goals.
Connor English scored twice and
Doug Tesoriero won 14-of-25 face-offs, including scooping up 11 ground balls. He also was credited with an assist. Goalkeepers
Andrew West and
AJ Fiore combined for six saves in the loss.
The Tigers were outstanding all afternoon on offense, with Alex Capretta scoring five times and Jeff Froccaro posting three goals and an assist and Forest Sonnenfeldt registering a hat trick. Tyler Fiorito made 11 saves in picking up the win in goal. Froccaro and John Cunningham each had seven ground ball wins, with Froccaro adding a 10-of-19 night at the face-off X to his four-point effort.
The Princeton win snapped a streak of nine consecutive seasons that Cornell earned at least a share of the Ivy League title and also guaranteed the Tigers an opportunity to host the conference tournament. The Big Red had played host to the tournament in each of its first two seasons.
At the end of the night, the stats looked similar, but the Tigers always seemed to be one step ahead. The Tigers held a 34-33 edge in shots and had a 30-27 advantage in ground balls. Cornell killed off all four Princeton extra-man chances and scored just 1-of-6 of its own.
Princeton carried all the momentum into the early minutes after celebrating Senior Day, juumping out to a 3-0 lead midway through the quarter. The Big Red handled the pressure well, scoring two goals seven seconds apart, one from a senior (Lang) and one from a freshman (Donovan).
The teams traded goals early in the second to make it 4-3 Tigers before the home team took control. Princeton scored four straight times and posted six of the next seven goals to turn a one-goal contest into a decisive 10-4 contest. Froccaro scored three times in the second and Capretta tallied twice in the third and again early in the fourth. Cornell scored twice late to cap the scoring.
