Swinford's 12th-Inning Blast Lifts Baseball to Division Title

4/29/2012 5:31:00 PM

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Ben Swinford hit a solo home run in the 12th inning, and freshman reliever Kellen Urbon didn't allow any earned runs over 6 1/3 innings to power the Big Red baseball team to a 4-3 victory in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against Princeton, lifting Cornell to its second outright Ivy League Lou Gehrig Division championship.

The Tigers won the first game, 6-0, to set up the dramatic winner-take-all second game. With the victory, Cornell (29-14-1, 14-6 Ivy) both tied a program record for victories in the season and earned the right to host the Ivy League Championship Series for the first time. The Big Red will take on Red Rolfe Division champion Dartmouth in a best-of-three set May 5-6 at Hoy Field in Ithaca, N.Y.

Game 1 – Princeton 6, Cornell 0 – Box Score
Bowman pitched a two-hitter for the Tigers, striking out 11. Brenton Peters worked the only two walks of the game against Bowman, becoming the only Big Red baserunner to advance to second base in the game, doing so in both the first and sixth innings.

Princeton broke through in the fourth despite Cornell starter Brent Jones retiring the first two batters of the inning. The next six batters produced three singles, two walks and a two-run double by Blake Thomsen to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers' Steve Harrington hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to cap the scoring.

Game 2 – Cornell 4, Princeton 3 (12 inn.) – Box Score
Swinford's second collegiate home run rescued the Big Red by ending a three-game losing streak and propelling the team to its seventh win when trailing or tied coming into its final at-bat. Urbon's longest career outing yielded just three hits and an unearned run while he struck out five. Already with a program record nine saves, Urbon improved his record to 2-1 while lowering his ERA to 0.59.

Princeton scored first on a John Mishu home run to right field in the first inning. The Big Red answered in the fifth. Kevin Tatum led off with a single, then moved to second on a groundout. Matt Hall was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on, then Peters hit an RBI single to right field that plated Tatum and tied the score at 1.

Princeton jumped back ahead in the sixth. Matt Bowman hit a triple, then Sam Mulroy drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two out. Mike Ford followed with a single up the middle to score Bowman and end the day for Cornell starter Brian McAfee. Kellen Urbon emerged from the bullpen an induced an inning-ending groundout.

Cornell stormed back ahead in the seventh. Tatum once again led off with a single, this time moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Lee. Hall followed with his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot down the right-field line that gave the Big Red its first lead of the series.

That's how the score stayed until the bottom of the ninth. Ford led off with a single, then departed in favor of pinch runner Peter Owens. Steve Harrington laid down a bunt that ended up wreaking havoc. Harrington ended up with a single, then Owens -- who was in motion when Harrington squared to bunt -- rounded second to take third. The flip to first got away for an error, allowing Owens to score and tie the game at 3 and force extra innings.

Swinford's homer came with two out in the 12th after the last 12 Big Red batters were retired in order. For Tatum, it was his 10th mutliple-hit game of the season.
