LIVE STATS
ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell picked up its first win of the season last weekend against Princeton on senior day at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red offense exploded for 50 points; 20 points more than it had scored in the first four games combined, after being shut out the week before by Army. The Big Red is currently tied with Mansfield in sixth place in the CSFL standings at 1-4. The Big Red has finished in the middle of the pack the past four seasons, and will look to get back to the top of the league in 2013. The coaching staff named five captains for the season:
Kyle Higgins,
Brendan Miller,
Michael Monahan,
Chris Sitko and
Bennett Winters.
THE HEAD COACH
Coach
Terry Cullen is now in his 50th season with the Big Red sprint football program and boasts a career record of 169-138-7 heading into this weekend's game. Cullen has been a member of the coaching staff since 1964 and spent 13 years as an assistant to his father, Bob Cullen, before the two shared head coaching responsibilities through the 1995 season. From 1996 to 2007, Terry served as the sole head coach of the program. He officially became the
Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football in 2001.
THE CO-HEAD COACH
In August 2008, Cornell announced that
Bart Guccia would assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions for the Big Red. Guccia is now in his eighth year with the team and has posted a 22-18 record, including the first five games of the 2013 season.
ABOUT NAVY
Navy rebounded after missing a week of play due to the government shutdown with a 42-27 win over Post on the road last weekend to improve to 4-0. One of the team's wins came by virtue of a forfeit by Princeton in week two. A strong-starting team, Navy has outscored its opponents 26-0 in the first quarter this season. The Midshipmen have the third best offense in the CSFL, averaging 343 yards per game with Corey Garcia leading the way on the ground with 202 yards on 40 carries with two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Navy is the best in the league giving up an average of only 159 yards per game. Matt Piortrowicz leads the team with 25 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss. Chris Mershon has three sacks to his credit for a net loss of 21 yards.
THE SERIES WITH NAVY
Navy has built a commanding lead in the series between the two teams which began in 1908. In last year's game on Schoellkopf Field, the Midshipmen kept Cornell out of the end zone and earned an 11-3 victory and has won the last six meetings. Cornell's last win in the series came in 2006 when the Big Red edged Navy 16-10 in overtime to help preserve its undefeated season.
A WIN AGAINST NAVY WOULD…
…be Coach
Terry Cullen's 170
th program victory and the team's first against Navy since 2006.
CLASS OF 2014
Eleven seniors won their last game on Schoellkopf Field last Friday to even both the overall record (13-13) and record at home (8-8) at a perfect .500 during their careers. Members of the class include: John Rodgriguez,
Nick Perez,
Brendan Miller,
Steven Ham,
Kyle Higgins,
John Kelder,
Mike Angelo, Alex Duke,
Keegan Colletier,
George Wigsten and
Spenser Gruenenfelder.
ROUGH START
The last time Cornell sprint football started a season 0-4 was in 1989. The team finished 1-6 overall with a 1-4 record in the Eastern Lightweight Football League – which was the Collegiate Sprint Football League's moniker until 1998.
LEADING WIDEOUT
The Big Red's
Spenser Gruenenfelder leads all CSFL receivers with 25 receptions heading into week six. Gruenenfelder has amassed a total of 294 yards through the air thanks in large part to a seven-catch, 132 yard performance in Cornell's season opener at Post. He grabbed his first two touchdowns of the season last weekend against Princeton.
TOP-FIVE CARRIER
Sophomore
Benjamin Herrera is ranked fifth among CSFL rushers with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 46 carries. Both of his touchdowns came in last week's win over Princeton, as did 162 of his rushing yards.
UNDER CENTER
Senior quarterback
Brendan Miller is third in the CSFL in passing this season with 610 yards on 64 completions with five touchdowns. He is now just 257 yards short of 4,000 for his career. Against Princeton last week, Miller completed 70 percent of his passes and connected for three touchdown passes – more than he had thrown in all four previous games combined. Miller has served as the primary option for the Big Red under center for the past two seasons; missing only one game in that time span because of a concussion. Through his first three seasons he accumulated 3,133 passing yards and threw for 26 touchdowns, while rushing for another 10 scores. He finished second in the league in passing in 2012 and was the CSFL First Team Quarterback.
ALL-CSFL RETURNERS
Following the 2012 season 16 Cornell athletes were recognized by the CSFL as all-league players; first team, second team and honorable mention. Of the five named to the CSFL First Team only two are back for the 2013 campaign: Miller and senior punter/kicker
John Rodriguez. Three of the second-teamers –
Kyle Higgins,
John Kelder and
Michael Monahan – will suit up again for the Big Red, as will two of the honorable mention selections:
Spenser Gruenenfelder and
Bennett Winters.
UP NEXT
The Big Red will finish out the season at Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 26 with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
