Women's Hockey Completes Sweep of Northeastern With 3-0 Victory

Slebodnick Ties Mazzotta For Most All-Time Wins at Cornell

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior goaltender Lauren Slebodnick made 23 saves for her 16th career shutout and the No. 4/5 women's hockey team got goals from each member of the junior class in a 3-0 victory over Northeastern on Sunday to complete a weekend sweep at Lynah Rink.

With the win, Slebodnick now has 53 career victories and is tied atop the program's leaderboard with former netminder Amanda Mazzotta, who played for the Big Red from 2008-2011.

Cornell (2-0) got single points from seven different players, while senior co-captain Alyssa Gagliardi contributed two assists in the victory. Juniors Emily Fulton, Monika Leck and Jillian Saulnier scored the goals, giving the Big Red two victories over Northeastern (3-3) in as many days.

The Big Red opened the scoring with a four-on-four goal at 15:30 of the first period. Senior defenseman Hayleigh Cudmore played the puck off the half-boards to Fulton in the neutral zone, who moved in two-on-one with classmate Saulnier. Fulton's cross-ice pass attempt was deflected by a Northeastern defender but, fortunately for Cornell, the puck caromed back onto Fulton's stick and she was able to convert into the vacated short side of the goal.

Cornell then doubled its lead 1:55 into the second, taking advantage of an aggressive Northeastern forecheck to spring an odd-man rush the other way. Sophomore forward Taylor Woods sent Hanna Bunton up the left wing, and she directed a pass to Leck on the far post for the perfect finish over the left shoulder of Huskies goaltender Chloe Desjardins.

Despite the lop-sided score, Northeastern had its fair share of scoring opportunties, recording 23 shots on the afternoon. But Slebodnick was steady for the Big Red and ensured her team stayed in front. One of her biggest saves came with Northeastern finding some traction late in the second period. A turnover in the Cornell zone left the Huskies' Kelly Wallace alone in the slot, but Slebodnick smothered the shot and didn't allow a rebound.

Saulnier put the game out of reach 5:08 into the third period. She started a pretty passing play with linemate Fulton to set up senior forward Jessica Campbell from the top of the crease, but the shot went just wide. Campbell regained possession behind the net and skated toward the corner, cycling with Alyssa Gagliardi. The senior defenseman fought through traffic along the wall and attempted a wraparound that slid across the crease for Saulnier to convert from short range.

Slebodnick was pushed back into action a couple minutes later, getting the left pad to a spinning Paige Savage backhand from the slot.. With 13 minutes remaining, she stopped Hayley Masters on a shot from the right circle, then slid across to her right to thwart Wallace.

In a last-ditch effort to break through, Northeastern pulled its goalie on a late power play to create a 6-on-4 advantage. But the Big Red defense withstood the threat with Slebodnick making three stops and her defenders blocking an additional three shots from the Huskies.

Cornell begins the defense of its ECAC Hockey championship next weekend with a pair of games at Lynah Rink. Clarkson invades at 4 p.m. Friday, then St. Lawrence visits at 3 p.m. Saturday.
