Five-Goal First Period Helps No. 3 Women's Hockey Down Princeton

11/1/2013 11:46:00 PM

Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the No. 3 Cornell women's hockey team got goals from four different players in a five-goal first period to beat Princeton 5-4 at Hobey Baker Rink.

The Big Red (5-0, 3-0 ECAC Hockey) led 5-0 heading into the first intermission, but Princeton (1-2, 1-2 ECAC Hockey) came out firing in the second, netting all four of its goals in the middle frame – and three in a span of 50 seconds – to swing the momentum. However, the Tigers comeback attempt fell short, and Cornell was able to hang on for the win.

Junior Jillian Saulnier put the Big Red up 1-0 on a feed from senior co-captain Alyssa Gagliardi and assisted on the team's second goal by sophomore Taylor Woods.

Woods intercepted a Princeton pass along the left half-wall and played it behind the net to Saulnier. Saulnier then sent a pass back in front to a crashing Woods who beat Princeton's starting netminder Kimberly Newell high on the blocker side.

With just under two minutes to play in the first period, ECAC Hockey Player of the Month Emily Fulton netted the first of three Big Red goals in a one minute and 21 second span when she forced a Princeton turnover at the side of the net. Fulton worked around two defenders and – although her initial shot was saved by Newell – was able to bury the rebound and increase Cornell's lead to three goals.

Woods netted her second of the night from Monika Leck and Gagliardi 54 seconds later, stuffing the puck under Newell's pads at the side of the net to make it 4-0 Cornell.

Just 36 seconds later, freshman Kaitlin Doering tallied her first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner for the Big Red.

Classmate Caroline DeBruin moved into the Princeton zone with speed along the left boards before sending a wrister on net. Newell was unable to corral the rebound and Doering – who was left unmarked at the far post – jumped on the loose puck to extend the Big Red's lead to five goals heading into the break.

Princeton's Jaimie McDonnell capitalized on an early second-period power-play and beat senior goaltender Lauren Slebodnick for the Tigers' first goal. Teammates Olivia Mucha and Rose Alleva followed suit and netted Princeton's second and third goals within the next 50 seconds to cut Cornell's lead to 5-3.

Less than a minute after scoring the third goal, Princeton was whistled for a penalty after Gabie Figueroa tripped up senior co-captain Jessica Campbell on a breakaway. Campbell's penalty shot was saved by Princeton netminder Ashley Holt – who replaced Newell after Cornell's fifth goal - but the ensuing Tigers penalty stifled their comeback just enough to help Cornell regain its composure.

Ali Pankowski added another power-play goal for Princeton from Mucha and Alleva midway through the second to conclude the scoring.

Slebodnick finished with 19 saves, while Newell and Holt combined for 26 saves for the Tigers. Gagliardi had a game-high nine blocked shots.

Cornell continues its road trip at No. 9/10 Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
