Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior
Jessica Campbell and juniors
Jillian Saulnier and
Emily Fulton each finished with four points to pace the Big Red to an 8-1 win over Union at Lynah Rink on Saturday. The victory is Cornell's seventh of the season, and fifth in ECAC Hockey contests.
With the four-point weekend, Cornell joins the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers as the only two teams still unbeaten in Division I women's hockey this season.
The Big finished the game 3-for-4 on the power play and netminders
Lauren Slebodnick and freshman
Paula Voorheis combined for 29 saves. Voorheis – who saw her first collegiate minutes against the Dutchwomen – took over for the senior after the first intermission. Cornell ended up with only a slight edge in shots on goal, 31-30, as Union's defense blocked an impressive 23 attempts. Junior Alex Tancrell-Fontaine led the defensive efforst for the Dutchwomen with five blocks.
Despite another shaky start, the Big Red was able to beat Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg early when
Jillian Saulnier buried a loose puck at the side of the net 3:36 seconds into the first period.
Lundberg made the initial save on a
Monika Leck backhand attempt, but the rebound popped out to the top of the crease and into a pile of players. Campbell ended up on the ice with the puck between her legs, but managed to kick it towards the far post before officials blew the play dead. Saulnier lifted the puck over Lunberg's glove to give Cornell a 1-0 lead.
It was more than 11 minutes later before the Big Red netted its second goal, but that would open the flood gates and put the game out of reach for the Dutchwomen.
Sophomore defender
Cassandra Poudrier put the Big Red up 2-0 and scored her first of two power-play goals on the day – and first of the season – with just over six minutes remaining in the first period. Poudrier jumped on a loose puck after the Union defense blocked a shot by Fulton from the right circle.
Hayleigh Cudmore also picked up an assist on the play, feeding Fulton from the left point for the initial drive.
Thirty seconds later, sophomore
Taylor Woods beat Lundberg on the backhand from the slot to put Cornell up 3-0.
Anna Zorn started the play after she carried the puck along the left side into Union's zone with speed, but sent a wrist shot wide of the Union netminder who had come out to cut off the angle. Woods recovered Zorn's shot in the right corner and played it out to
Alyssa Gagliardi on the blue line, who then hit Woods in stride as she split the defenders.
Forty-seven seconds after Woods' tally, Saulnier netted her second of the evening winning a battle along the left boards with help from Campbell, who freed the puck from the skates of a Union defender. Saulnier skated in, split the defense and put a backhand over Lundberg's left shoulder while falling to the ice to send Cornell into the first intermission with a four-goal advantage.
Zorn notched the first goal of her sophomore campaign 6:13 into the second period collecting a bouncing rebound at the far post to put Cornell on top 5-0.
In transition Poudrier moved the puck through the neutral zone before handing it off to Woods across the blue line. Woods wrister from the right faceoff dot bounced high of Lundberg's chest protector and landed at the far post, where a crashing Zorn put it in on the backhand.
Less than a minute later, Fulton tallied her first of two second-period scores as the trailer on a Big Red breakout. Campbell and Saulnier skated into the Union zone two-on-one, with Saulnier snapping off a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle. Lundberg again made the initial stop, but kicked the rebound out in front onto the stick of Fulton who put Cornell up 6-0.
The Dutchwomen found themselves with a two-man advantage after Poudrier and Cudmore were assessed penalties just eight seconds apart midway through the second period. One minute and 17 seconds into to the 5-on-3, Union's Ashley Johnston gave her team it's only goal of the evening.
With Cornell's kill unit packed tight in front the net, Stefanie Thomson played the puck from beneath the red line to Jessica Kaminsky in the left circle. Kaminsky slid a pass to Johnston in the slot, who teed up a slapshot that beat Voorheis low, glove side at the 10:13 mark of the second.
But Fulton and the Big Red answered with a power-play goal of its own with just over two minutes to play in the middle frame to regain the six-goal lead.
Cornell's top line again bested Union in transition rush as Saulnier's pass from the right wing was dropped by Campbell in the middle to Fulton, who was trailing on the left wing, and bested Lundberg on the blocker side with a high, blistering wrist shot.
The only goal of the third period was Poudrier's second power-play score and started when Union blocked a shot by Fulton in the left circle. She collected the puck and played it out to Cudmore on the point who then touched a pass to Poudrier on the opposite side. The sophomore one-timed a slapshot and put Cornell up 8-1 before Lundberg was able to get a read on the play through traffic.
With the loss, Union falls to 4-8-0 on the season and 1-3-0 against ECAC Hockey opponents.
