Poudrier, Voorheis help No. 3 Women's Hockey to Come-From-Behind Win at Syracuse

Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore defenseman Cassandra Poudrier scored two power-play goals and freshman goaltender Paula Voorheis stopped 39 shots, as the No. 3 Big Red women's hockey team came back from an early two-goal deficit to beat Syracuse 5-2 at the Onondaga War Memorial.

This is the second time this season Poudrier has netted two goals with the man advantage, having also done so in Cornell's 8-1 win over Union on Nov. 9. All of the sophomore defenseman's five goals this season have come in man-up situations.

Voorheis made her first collegiate start against the Orange, and earned her first career victory, as she is now 1-1-0 in three career appearances. The six foot tall netminder showed some nerves early on but clearly gained more confidence with every save, stopping a number of shots through traffic and moving well across the crease to quell rebound chances late in the game.

Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by Julie Knerr and Margot Scharfe. Knerr tallied her second of the year at the 6:51 mark, beating Voorheis high on the glove side with a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle. Scharfe added the second goal when she pounced on a rebound at the top of the crease on the far side. Kaillie Goodnough the right circle and was turned away by Voorheis

Prior to tonight, Cornell had trailed in four other games this season, going 1-1-2 in those contests.

With time winding down in the first, freshman Caroline DeBruin cut the Orange lead in half with her second of the year from classmate Kaitlin Doering and Morgan Richardson.

The play started when Richardson sent the puck ahead to Doering in the left circle. Despite being tightly-defended, Doering managed to backhand a pass to DeBruin who was cruising through the slot and beat Orange netminder Kallie Billadeau with a high wrister just under the crossbar.

The goal would prove to be huge momentum booster for the Big Red, as the team came out firing on all cylinders in the second period.

Cassandra Poudrier evened things at two on Cornell's first power play of the game at 3:46 of the middle frame when she let go of a hard slapshot from just inside the left point that beat Billadeau - who was screened in front – on the blocker side. Hayleigh Cudmore and Emily Fulton picked up assists on the play.

Jillian Saulnier gave Cornell its first lead of the game just under three minutes later, when she battled Billadeau for a rebound in the crease. Although the puck appeared to be under the Orange goaltender, Saulnier kept digging and was able to free the puck and find the back of the net to put the Big Red up 3-2. DeBruin – who took the initial shot – was credited with the first assist, while Alyssa Gagliardi earned the second assist.

With 49 seconds to play in the second period, Poudrier put the Big Red up by two with her second power-play tally of the game. Emily Fulton played the puck out of the defensive zone to Poudrier, who picked it up along the boards as she came out of the penalty box. She muscled her way through two Syracuse defenders and drew a penalty before beating Billadeau with a backhand to the blocker side.

Jessica Campbell forced a turnover at the Syracuse blue line and carried the puck through the neutral zone before shooting it into the empty Syracuse net at the 18:38 mark of the third to put Cornell up by three and seal the game at 5-2.

The Big Red finished two-for-seven on the power play, registering 12 shots and successfully killed off six penalties.

With the win, Cornell finishes the first semester with an overall record of 10-1-2, while Syracuse falls to 7-7-2.

Cornell's next games will be Jan. 3 and 4 as the team travels to Brown and Yale to resume ECAC Hockey play.
