Squash Wraps Up Regular Season With Three-Match Weekend

2/7/2013 10:40:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Big Red squash teams will play their final three regular-season matches in a three-day stretch this weekend, starting with Senior Day at 5:30 p.m. Friday against top-ranked Princeton at Belkin International Squash Courts.

The Cornell women's team (11-3, 3-2 Ivy) has alternated wins and losses over its last four, with the most recent result being a 9-0 blanking of William Smith on Tuesday. That victory put the Big Red just one win away from tying the program record for most in a season, set just last year.

Freshman Abbey Foster has won 10 matches this season, leading the team by one over junior Jessenia Pacheco, sophomore Rachel Au and senior co-captain Margaret Remsen. Sophomore Danielle Letourneau has a 7-3 record from the No. 1 spot after finishing last season ranked ninth in the nation, and senior co-captain Jaime Laird (8-3) typically rounds out the top of the lineup from the No. 3 spot.

Princeton (9-0, 5-0) can clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title with a win Friday at Belkin, having won all 17 previous meetings between the teams. Cornell then hits the road to take on 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall (10-7), which it has defeated eight straight times dating back to the teams' second meeting in 1998. The Diplomats are riding a five-match winning streak coming into a Friday match at George Washington.

Penn (10-2, 3-2) has climbed from fifth to third in the country throughout the season, thanks in large part to a 6-3 victory over Trinity on Jan. 19 in Philadelphia. The Quakers are 18-2 all-time against the Big Red, including a pair of 7-2 victories last season — the latter coming in the fifth-place match of the season-ending Howe Cup national tournament. The last time Cornell defeated Penn was on Nov. 17, 2001 by a score of 7-2.

The Cornell men's team (13-3, 3-2) split its Ivy League matches last weekend, winning at Dartmouth before falling to Harvard the following day. The Big Red then cruised to a 9-0 victory over neighbor Hobart on Tuesday evening. One more victory would give Cornell its highest total in program history since the 1997-98 season, when it won a record 17. Ninth-year head coach Mark Devoy is already the winningest coach in program history with 95.

Sophomore Ryan Todd continues to lead the team in individual victories with 12, one ahead of senior co-captain Owen Butler. Sophomore Aditya Jagtap, senior Arjun Gupta, and freshmen Graham Dietz and Abhijit Malik all have 10 victories apiece. Junior Bryan Keating has the squad's best winning percentage with a 9-1 record.

Friday will be a tall task for the Big Red as it takes on the defending national champion Tigers for the first time since Princeton topped Cornell in the 2012 Potter Cup semifinals. The Tigers have won 47 of the teams' 48 all-time meetings, with the lone Big Red victory among available records coming on Nov. 21, 2004 in Mark Devoy's first season as head coach. Princeton is 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in Ivy play.

Franklin & Marshall (14-3) has won 10 consecutive matches, holding down the No. 7 ranking. The Big Red has won its last 17 matches against F&M, dating back to 1998. Penn (4-8, 1-4 Ivy) is ranked 12th in the country heading into its Friday match at Columbia. The Big Red has won its last five matches against the Quakers, including a 9-0 victory last season. Victories over both Princeton and Penn would give Cornell a program-record five victories in Ancient Eight competition.
