ITHACA, N.Y. – Armed with the highest national ranking in program history, the Big Red men's tennis will play host to 2012 NCAA tournament qualifier Memphis at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center. It will be just the second all-time meeting between the 23rd-ranked Big Red and the 69th-ranked Tigers.
Cornell (9-1) enters the match red hot, with seven straight victories dating back more than a month. The streak got started with a win Feb. 3 at St. John's, which was nationally ranked at the time. The Big Red then made a statement by winning the ECAC Indoor Men's Tennis Championships, toppling Harvard and Columbia — the tournament's top two seeds — in the semifinals and finals to claim its second ECAC Indoor title in the last three years. Also mixed into the streak were 7-0 sweeps of Fordham (Feb. 10), Binghamton and Colgate (March 3).
Sophomore
Sam Fleck has a team-best record of 8-1 from the top half of the singles lineup, while classmates
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen and
Jason Luu are 7-1 from the middle of the order. Fleck also teams with sophomore
Kyle Berman to comprise a No. 3 doubles tandem that is a perfect 7-0 so far.
Memphis (3-4) is coming off a pair of 4-2 losses to No. 40 Vanderbilt and No. 13 Ole Miss of the Southeastern Conference. All of the Tigers' victories have come at home, including matches against No. 57 Michigan State (Jan. 18), Southern Illinois and Murray State (Feb. 8).
At the top of the lineup are Connor Glennon and Joe Salisbury, the latter of whom is ranked eighth in the Ohio Valley region and 79th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Glennon (10th), David O'Leary (11th) and Johnny Grimal (14th) are also regionally ranked.
This will be the first time Memphis has played a road match against an Ivy League team. The only other time the Tigers played an Ivy school was when it clashed with Cornell on March 14, 2003 in Blacksburg, Va. Memphis eked out a 4-3 victory. The Big Red is 0-7 all-time against current Conference USA schools (0-2 vs. Southern Methodist and Central Florida; 0-1 vs. Memphis, Rice and Alabama-Birmingham).
