Women's Lacrosse Held to Five Goals in Loss at Dartmouth

4/6/2013 1:46:00 PM

Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – Sarah Hefner had her second consecutive three-goal game, but it wasn't enough for the Big Red as it lost 9-5 at Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.

No. 14 Cornell (6-4, 2-3 Ivy League) has now lost four consecutive games, while Dartmouth (8-3, 4-0) remains undefeated in Ivy play.

The Big Green defense was stifling most of the afternoon, and Cornell was unable to get many quality attempts on goal. Big Green goalie Kristen Giovanniello made 10 saves, and Cornell did not reach double digit goals for the first time all season.

On a cold, windy afternoon at Sculley-Fahey Field, Cornell come out strong in the second half. The Big Red tallied two consecutive goals to cut Dartmouth's lead to 5-4, but Dartmouth responded even better with the next four strikes to make it 9-4 with eight minutes left in the game.

Amanda D'Amico had a goal with 4:36 left to cut the lead down to four, but the clock ran out on the Big Red before it could muster any further comeback.

Freshman Emily Tripodi had a strong afternoon, earning three assists, and senior captain Caroline Salisbury had Cornell's other goal. Kate Ivory was again excellent on defense, causing three turnovers and picking up three ground balls. Salisbury led the Big Red with two draw controls.

The Big Green won all eight draws in the second half, keeping possession away from Cornell immediately after goals, and the Big Red turned it over three times while attempting clears.

The day began more promising for Cornell. After giving up the first goal early, the Big Red won the ensuing draw control and tied the game on a goal by Hefner. Tripodi had the ball on the right side of the net, and she went toward goal before centering the ball with a pass to Hefner. Hefner took the shot quickly and beat Giovanniello to make it 1-1 less than three minutes in.

Cornell's next goal again came from Hefner, this time on a pass from Salisbury through the middle of the fan from the outside. Hefner's goal was man-up after Dartmouth's Frances Bird took a yellow card just before, and it gave Cornell a 2-1 advantage. That lead, though, would be its last of the day.

Dartmouth took control of play after that, scoring the next four goals to take a 5-2 lead. Cornell put goalie Carly Gniewek into the contest after that, and the sophomore played the final 45 minutes and finished with five saves.

Cornell had long stretches of possession in the final 15 minutes of the first half, but multiple attempts on goal were off target or saved by Giovanniello. The teams went into halftime with the Big Green still leading by three.

The teams traded turnovers at the start of the second half, but the Big Red eventually got control of the ball in its offensive end. Tripodi found Rachel Moody in front of the net with a pass from behind it, and Moody finished the play to cut Dartmouth's lead to 5-3.

Hefner completed her hat trick three minutes later, taking yet another feed from Tripodi behind the net and beating Giovanniello low. That forced a Dartmouth timeout, and the Big Green came back from it strong, winning the next draw and scoring on its next two possessions to regain a three-goal lead at 7-4.

Dartmouth added two more goals afterward, and Cornell went on a 19-minute scoring drought that ended with D'Amico's goal.

Cornell plays next against Brown at Schoellkopf Field on Friday. The Big Red and Bears are set for a 4 p.m. start.
