ITHACA, N.Y. -- The women's hockey team poured 25 shots on goal over the final two periods Saturday, but couldn't rally past Harvard in a 3-1 loss in front of 2,029 fans at Lynah Rink. The third-ranked Big Red falls to 14-2-3 on the season and 9-1-2 in ECAC Hockey play.

Sophomore forward Anna Zorn scored the Big Red's lone goal late in the first period, but the home side never led against the sixth-ranked Crimson.

For just the sixth time in 19 games this season, Cornell conceded the first goal. Harvard's Miye D'Oench blasted a shot from a sharp angle at the bottom of the right circle that sailed into the top part of the net to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead at the 8:15 mark.

Cornell got back to even just 1:28 before the intermission on Zorn's third goal of the season. Jess Brown worked the puck back to Cassandra Poudrier at the left point. She blasted a high shot past a pile of players that Zorn deflected from about waist high and into the net.

The second period featured plenty of action at both ends, but just one goal thanks to strong play from both goalies. Harvard's Emerance Maschmeyer stopped a Jessica Campbell breakaway at the 6:57 mark, then flashed a blocker out to thwart Campbell's shot from the slot at 17:08. Maschmeyer had 12 saves in the frame.

Cornell's Lauren Slebodnick was also tested a few times, most notably with a right pad save on Jessica Harvey's backhanded offering on a breakaway at the 13:10 mark.

But Harvard eventually broke through to take a 2-1 lead when Crimson defenseman Marissa Gedman jumped into the play and slid a seeing-eye shot from the right circle off the far post and into the net with 5:57 to play.

The Big Red once again held the advantage of play in the third period, outshooting the Crimson, 13-6. Cornell had several particularly good opportunities to equalize in the final five minutes. Hannah Bunton picked off a clearing attempt on the right halfwall, then walked into the circle before having a shot smothered by Maschmeyer.

Thirty-three seconds later, Jillian Saulnier broke toward goal from a similar spot and had a shot labeled for the upper corner that Maschmeyer shrugged away. The last quality chance came with 1:33 to play when Saulnier chipped the puck up the right wall on the rush and found Campbell cutting down the slot, but her deflected shot was turned away.

Harvard's Mary Parker then closed the scoring with a shot from neutral ice into the empty net.

Cornell hits the road next weekend for games at St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
