ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior forward
Jessica Campbell scored two goals, including the winner midway through the third period, to lead the women's hockey team to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Princeton on Friday in Game 1 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series at Lynah Rink. Cornell can close out the best-of-three series with another win in Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday, also at Lynah.
The teams played relatively tight to the vest in the opening 25 minutes, but the rest of the second period featured two goals and countless scoring opportunities. The majority of those chances belonged to the Big Red, but it was Tigers who jumped out to a two-goal lead on a pair of power-play strikes just 25 seconds apart.
Working on a five-on-three, Princeton broke the ice with Sally Butler's opportunistic goal. The Tigers worked the puck across the blue line to set up Ali Pakowski's shot from the left side, which rang off the inside of the near post. But the puck deflected across the crease toward the bottom of the opposite circle, where Butler converted into a yawning net.
On the next shift, a blocked shot went to the stick of Pankowski at the center point. She worked traded passes with Butler on the right side before finding Hilary Lloyd lurking behind the defense off the far post for a redirection to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the 8:12 mark.
While the scoring for the frame was over, the Big Red created countless opportunities that were turned away by Tigers goalie Kimberly Newell. Campbell was turned away on a one-on-one opportunity just 40 seconds after Princeton's second goal, then Newell got her left pad to
Taylor Woods' forehand move on a short-handed breakaway 36 seconds later.
Not to be outdone, Cornell's
Paula Voorheis kept the home side within striking distance with a few key saves before the second intermission. A turnover on a Big Red breakout attempt led to Brianne Mahoney's partial breakaway with 4:28 left in the period, but Voorheis was square to the shot and yielded no rebound. She later alertly poked the puck away from Kelsey Koelzer on a potential two-on-oh in the waning moments of the period.
Jillian Saulnier cut the Big Red's deficit to one goal on a pretty three-zone rush, finished off with a deft backhand past Newell's left pad just 2:06 into the final frame. Campbell then tied the game at 5:23 with her first goal off a back-door feed from
Taylor Woods standing at the top of the left circle. That set the stage for Campbell's winner with 11:08 to play.
With the faceoff in the Big Red zone to the right of Voorheis, Saulnier won the puck back to
Alyssa Gagliardi. She wheeled a forehand off the far wall and found Campbell in stride near the Princeton blue line. As the speedy winger turned toward goal, the puck slipped under Newell and gave the Big Red the only lead it would need.
It was the first time this season the Big Red won when trailing at the start of the third period. Cornell was previously 0-4-3 in those scenarios.
Voorheis made one last save to preserve the victory with 2:16 to play on Butler, stretching across to her right to stop the one-timer in the slot set up by Mahoney.
