Women's Tennis Closes Out Non-League Play vs. Binghamton, Army

3/20/2014 2:21:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's tennis team will wrap up the non-league portion of its schedule with two matches at Reis Tennis Center, playing host to Binghamton at 10 a.m. Saturday and Army at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Cornell (5-3) has won four of its five home matches this season, including last Saturday's 7-0 whitewash of visiting Akron. Freshman Alexandra D'Ascenzo is 7-1 from the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, and classmate Marika Cusick is 6-2 playing in the same positions. D'Ascenzo and sophomore Dena Tanenbuam are the 53rd-ranked doubles team in the country, as compiled by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Binghamton is 4-6 after two straight victories against NJIT, 4-3, and Temple, 5-2. Freshman Annie DiMuro has an 8-2 record from the middle of the lineup, and sophomore Agatha Ambrozy is 7-2 from the lower half of the order. Sophomores Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro have teamed up to win a doubles match in three of the Bearcats' last four matches. There are no seniors on the team's roster.

Army is an impressive 13-1 coming into its Saturday matches against Lafayette and Holy Cross. But one thing has been missing in the Black Knights' schedule so far – road matches. Army's first 16 matches have all been at home before the squad makes the trek to Ithaca on Wednesday. The Black Knights' lone loss came Feb. 16 against Rutgers, which also defeated the Big Red, 4-3, two weeks later. Jamila Paul and Carolyn Pitman are a combined 17-3 from the top two singles positions, and Army is 31-11 in doubles matches during dual season.

Cornell is 13-2 all-time against Binghamton, including a 7-0 sweep in their last meeting on March 13, 2013 at Reis Tennis Center. Tanenbaum and Lauren Frazier won both singles and doubles matches in that tilt. The Big Red also has historically enjoyed success against the Black Knights, winning 10 of 11 all-time matches. The latest came at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center last season, with Cornell cruising to a 7-0 sweep.
