3/22/2014 7:35:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's tennis team rolled to its fifth consecutive victory on Saturday, blanking St. John's, 7-0, at Reis Tennis Center. Cornell (10-4) is ranked 38th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Big Red started off by winning the top two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Sam Fleck and freshman Chris Vrabel teamed up for an 8-1 win at the No. 1 position, and juniors Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen won the No. 2 match, 8-5, in a matchup of nationally ranked teams.

Ranked 121st in the country, sophomore Stefan Vinti improved to 7-1 in dual-match singles by rallying from an opening-set loss to win in three. Junior Alex Sidney also went to a third set in his match at No. 4, but he rolled to a 6-0 win in that deciding set. Fleck breezed to a victory at the No. 1 position, dropping just one game over the two sets.

St. John's (8-5) lost for the first time in its last five matches. The Big Red, which is now 14-1 all-time against the Red Storm, opens Ivy League play at 1 p.m. next Saturday against Columbia at Reis Tennis Center.
