Game Highlights
ITHACA, N.Y. – For the fifth-straight game, the Cornell women's lacrosse team had seven or more different players find the back of the net, but the Big Red (4-3, 1-1 Ivy) couldn't capitalize on a last-second shot by
Rachel Moody and fell to Rutgers (5-4, 0-0 Big East) Saturday, 10-9.
Cornell broke out on a 4-0 run to start the game with goals from
Chelsea Rowe,
Lindsay Toppe,
Amie Dickson and
Kristy Gilbert.
Rutgers' Lauren Sbrilli put the Scarlet Knights on the board at 21:43, then the Big Red's
Shelby McNeilly scored with help from
Emily Tripodi. Sbrilli had her second of the game with 14:14 left to play, but Cornell's
Amanda D'Amico scored on a free-position shot.
A pair of Big Red freshman tallied one for Cornell, with
Amie Dickson assisting on a
Catherine Ellis goal.
Rutgers' Kristin Kocher scored with 7:21 left to kick-start a 7-0 run for the Scarlet Knights, but the Big Red took a 7-3 lead at halftime and led 16-6 in shots for the period.
Sbrilli and Jenny Vlahos scored just 38 seconds apart to cut Rutgers' deficit to 7-5 and the Scarlet Knights kept rolling, receiving tallies from Sbrilli again, two from Kocher and one from Megan Clements before
Rachel Moody and the Big Red could put a stop to the Scarlet Knights' offensive burst.
With Moody's goal, the Big Red came within one goal but Amanda Trendell capitalized on a free-position shot for Rutgers to create a two-goal deficit.
Catherine Ellis found the back of the net with 9:29 left to play and despite numerous opportunities, Cornell couldn't find the equalizer.
The Big Red outshot Rutgers 25-17 and won 13-of-21 draws.
For the Scarlet Knights, Lauren Sbrilli led the team with four goals and Kristin Kocher added two goals and one assist. Amanda Currell and Candice Dandridge shared time in net, with Dandridge recording five saves and picking up the win.
Catherine Ellis led Cornell with two goals and
Emily Tripodi had two assists.
Carly Gniewek and
Renee Poullott split time in the crease, each recording three saves.
Cornell will face No. 15 Stanford at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Schoellkopf Field.
