Game Highlights
ITHACA, N.Y. – Despite both
Lindsay Toppe and
Rachel Moody recording hat tricks, the Cornell women's lacrosse team fell to No. 13/11 Stanford Tuesday night, 17-9. The Big Red couldn't dig out from a decisive 9-0 first-half run by the Cardinal (7-1, 2-0 MPSF) and dropped to 4-4 (1-1 Ivy) on the season.
Just 36 seconds into the game,
Amanda D'Amico got Cornell on the board with a free-position goal.
Anna Kim broke open offense for Stanford off a pass from Kelsey Murray and the Cardinal never looked back. Alex Poplawski, Emily Newstrom and Meg Lentz each scored twice before Kim added her second goal. Rachel Ozer chipped in the last goal during that run for Stanford.
23:08 passed before Cornell's scoring drought ended when Moody capitalized on a pass from D'Amico.
Hannah Farr and Lentz made sure Stanford finished the half strong and the Cardinal took an 11-3 lead into the intermission, with a 24-5 shot advantage.
Poplawski netted Stanford's 12th goal just one minute into the second half, but Cornell's
Sarah Hefner buried a pass from Toppe 35 seconds later. Two minutes later, the Cardinal's Lentz took advantage of a free-position attempt and made the deficit 13-4. Toppe then snuck one past Stanford goaltender Lyndsey Munoz.
Murray had a hand in the Cardinal's next three goals, assisting on Poplawski's fourth tally and scoring the next two. Alexandra Crerend had Stanford's final mark of the game at 11:03.
Moody then sandwiched goals from Toppe and
Kristy Gilbert to round out the scoring for the Big Red.
Toppe finished the day with three goals and one assist and
Rachel Moody had three goals to lead Cornell on offense.
Renee Poullott and
Carly Gniewek split time in the crease, with Poullott recording three saves and Gniewek recording seven.
Cornell won 16-of-28 draws, with Hefner recording nine alone.
Meg Lentz and Alex Poplawski had four goals each for Stanford and goaltender Lyndsey Munoz had four saves.
The Big Red will travel to Princeton Saturday to take on the Tigers at 1 p.m.
