Women's Lacrosse Set For Ivy Matchup At Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team will travel to Princeton on Saturday for a 1 p.m contest. The Big Red (4-4, 1-1 Ivy) looks pick up its second conference win against the Tigers (5-3, 1-1 Ivy).

ABOUT THE BIG RED
Sophomore midfielder Emily Tripodi is currently first in the Ivy League and 19th in the nation for assists with 18, and first in the Ivy League and 9th in the nation for assists per game with 2.57. Sophomore attack Lindsay Toppe is currently 2nd in the Ivy League and 51st in the nation for goals with 22, and 2nd in the Ivy League and 20th in the nation for goals per game (3.14). She also leads the Ivy League in points (29) and points per game (4.14), good for 59th and 29th in the nation respectively.

HEAD COACH JENNY GRAAP
Jenny Graap returned to her alma mater in 1997 with one goal in mind: to build the Cornell women's lacrosse team into a championship contender. Now in her 17th year at the helm, the 2002 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Coach of the Year and 2006 Inside Lacrosse Magazine and IWLCA Northeast Coach of the Year has developed the Big Red women's lacrosse program into one of the most successful in the nation. She has posted a 154-103 record at Cornell and earned her 160th career win against Binghamton late last season.   

ABOUT PRINCETON
The Tigers, based in Princeton, N.J., have a 5-3 record on the season and are 1-1 in Ivy play entering the weekend. Princeton most recently is coming off a midweek win against Columbia by a 15-5 margin. Princeton's three losses came against a then-No. 6 Loyola squad and two one-goal overtime losses to then-No. 14 Georgetown and unranked Brown. Freshman Erin Doherty was named the Ivy League's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, and she leads the Tigers' offense with 15 goals and three assists for 18 points. Alexandra Bruno also has 18 points from 13 goals and five assists. Four other players on the roster also have at least 10 goals. Princeton has split time between goalies Annie Woehling (9.79 goals-against average, .417 save percent) and Caroline Franke (12.02 GAA, .355 save percent).

THE SERIES WITH PRINCETON
Historically, Princeton has dominated the series against Cornell. The teams have met 35 times, and Cornell has come away with wins in just four years: 1985, 1988, 2010 and 2012. The Tigers escaped Schoellkopf last season with a two-goal victory, 12-10, to lead the series 31-4. Sarah Hefner had a hat trick and Emily Tripodi scored twice in the loss.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite both Lindsay Toppe and Rachel Moody scoring hat tricks, Cornell to Stanford, 17-9 last Tuesday. Amanda D'Amico, Sarah Hefner and Kristy Gilbert also tallied one goal each for the Big Red. Renee Poullott and Carly Gniewek split time in the crease, with Poullott recording three saves and Gniewek recording seven. Cornell was outshot by the Cardinal 36-21 but was 16-of-28 on draws, with Hefner winning nine of those 16.

HOME SWEET HOME
Last season brought success at home, as the Big Red held an almost-perfect 6-1 record in home games. The only loss came on a 12-10 decision against Princeton, who eventually went on to the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red has posted a 20-15 home record during the past five seasons, making 2013 its most successful season at Schoellkopf since 2006 when Cornell was a perfect 7-0 at home.

THE HUNT FOR 300
Cornell picked up its 296th program win on March 11 at Binghamton with a 15-4 victory and will look to hit the 300-win milestone this season.

100-POINT CLUB
Junior attack Lindsay Toppe reached the 100-point mark with two goals against Albany on March 16. She is the currently the only member of the Big Red women's lacrosse team this season with over 100 career points (83-24—107).

2014 CAPTAINS
The Big Red will be represented by three captains this season: senior midfielder Amanda D'Amico, senior midfielder Chelsea Rowe, and junior attacker Lindsay Toppe.

BACK ON THE FIELD
The Big Red has five returning seniors this year: attacker Rachel Moody, midfielder Jessie Smith, midfielder Amanda D'Amico, midfielder Chelsea Rowe, and defender Cat Thomas. The current seniors are returning 26 percent of the goals scored from last season and 23 percent of the total points scored by the Big Red.

FRESH PERSPECTIVE
A large incoming class of nine freshmen joins the Cornell roster this season. On the attacking side, Catherine Ellis, Christie Powell, and Meredith Baker are new. The freshman midfielders are Mandy Powell, Amie Dickson, Kristy Gilbert, Catie Smith, and Kailey O'Hagan. Rounding out the freshman class is goalkeeper Renee Poullott.

CAREER NUMBERS WATCH
*Amanda D'Amico has 59 goals, 42 ground balls and 68 points.
*Sarah Hefner has 33 goals and 57 ground balls. She is currently seventh in the all-time Cornell rankings for draw controls with 95.
*Claire MacManus has 47 ground balls.
*Rachel Moody has 34 goals and 52 points.
*Chelsea Rowe has 31 draw controls.
*Cat Thomas has 30 ground balls.
*Lindsay Toppe has 83 goals, 24 assists and 107 points. She is tied for fifth in the all-time rankings for game-winning goals (6).
*Emily Tripodi has 56 assists and 71 points. She is fifth all-time for assists (56) in the Cornell record books.
