ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Sam Fleck clinched the men's tennis team's 4-3 victory with his three-set victory at No. 1 singles against Penn on Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.
 
Cornell, which entered the weekend ranked 52nd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is 13-8 and finished the Ivy League season with a 3-4 record. As things stood Sunday, the Big Red seem unlikely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
 
Fleck wrapped up Ivy play on three-match streaks in both singles and – paired with freshman Chris Vrabel – in doubles. The tandem is ranked 71st, defeating Jeremy Court and Zach Katz at the No. 2 position on Sunday. The 49th-ranked pairing of juniors Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen won its match at No. 1, giving Cornell the day's opening point.
 
That point during out to be pivotal, with the teams splitting the six singles matches. Freshmen Bernardo Casares Rosa (No. 3) and Colin Sinclair (No. 6) won their respective matches in straight sets, giving the Big Red a 3-1 lead as the final three singles matches advanced to third sets.
 
Penn (7-14, 3-4) was able to emerge from two of those three-setters with victories, but Fleck topped Nikola Kocovic at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to give Cornell its seventh straight victory against Penn in Ivy League play. Fleck, an All-Ivy League selection in both singles and doubles last year, is 8-4 overall and 5-2 in Ivy play in singles.
