ITHACA, N.Y. – Juniors
Sam Fleck and
Jason Luu won singles matches, but the men's tennis team lost its third straight Ivy League match Sunday, 5-2, to visiting Harvard at Reis Tennis Center.
Harvard (12-6, 1-1 Ivy League), ranked 34th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won all three doubles matches to opening the scoring. Cornell (10-7, 0-3) responded with two victories among the six singles matches.
Fleck's victory at the No. 1 position was particularly impressive, coming against the 31st-ranked singles player in the country, Denis Nguyen. Fleck took the opening set in a tiebreaker before Nguyen fought back in the second set to force a third-set super tiebreaker. Fleck prevailed, 10-7, but the Crimson had already clinched the match by that point.
Luu's victory came at the No. 6 position, where he rolled against Andrew Ball, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore
Stefan Vinti (No. 2) and freshman
Bernardo Casares Rosa (No. 3) also won the opening set of their respective matches.
The Big Red hits the road for its next three Ivy League matches. The stretch starts next weekend with tilts at Yale and Brown.
