ITHACA, N.Y. – The 2015 edition of Cornell field hockey's Senior Day could not have gone better, as the Big Red dispatched Lehigh, 7-0, this afternoon with all four seniors –
Katie Garrity,
Elizabeth Schaeffler,
Marisa Siergiej, and
Taylor Standiford – playing significant roles in the victory. In total, Cornell received seven goals from five different players and registered a school record 11 assists on the day. The 11 team assists also tied an Ivy League mark previously held by Princeton (11 vs. Delaware in 2012).
With the win, Cornell reached double-digit victories for the third year in a row, and for the eighth time in Head Coach
Donna Hornibrook's 12-year tenure with the program.
All four seniors started the game and the quartet didn't disappoint, with Siergiej and Standiford registering two goals and two assists, respectively, while Garrity added one goal. With her 13th career start in goal, Schaeffler posted two saves in the first half to earn the victory and improve her career record to 7-6.
"It was a great senior day for our girls," said head coach
Donna Hornibrook. "I thought they all performed really well. I think
Katie Garrity had her best overall career game. Liz Schaeffler played shutout hockey. Taylor added to her career assist total which is nice. And Marisa scored two really nice penalty corner goals."
The Big Red completely dominated the contest, holding the significant advantage in shots (29-6), shots on goal (20-5) and penalty corners (9-1).
"The ball movement we had I thought was really solid," said Hornibrook. "We showed a lot of different things and a lot of different looks and had some real fluidity to our play today. So I was pretty happy with it."
In addition to the outstanding play of the seniors, Cornell received two goals and one assist from
Katy Weeks, one goal and three assists from
Isabel Siergiej, three assists from
Katie Carlson, one goal from
Elizabeth Horak, and one assist apiece from
Sam McILwrick and
Isabel Josephs.
Freshman goalie
Mackenzie Gagliardi played the second half of the contest and registered three saves to help Cornell complete the shutout.
Lehigh goalie Julia Ward made 11 saves and allowed six goals in 57:52, while Katie Morris made one save and allowed one goal in 12:08. The Mountain Hawks also received a defensive save from Kat Kneizys.
The Big Red, sitting in second place in the conference standings with an Ivy League record of 4-1, is back in action next weekend at No. 19 Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon. The Tigers are the lone undefeated team in the conference and sit atop the Ivy standings at 5-0.
