Taylor Woods turned Friday night's women's hockey game at No. 10/10 Princeton into a last-minute thriller, scoring a shorthanded goal with 1 minute, 16 seconds remaining before hammering home the game-winner with 21 seconds left to give the Big Red a 2-1 victory at Baker Rink. The win was Cornell's first of the season and snapped a Tigers four-game win-streak to open the season.
Â
A power play tally from Kiersten Falck with 4:04 left in the first period gave Princeton a 1-0 lead that looked as if it was going to stick, especially when the Big Red was called for a penalty with 2:27 remaining in the game. But Woods had something to say about it. Freshman
Lenka Serdar battled with a defenseman along the right boards on the penalty kill, and the puck squirted out to Woods, who skated into the zone and beat Tigers goaltender DaSilva high on the short side, breaking DaSilva's shutout streak of 118:44 and tying the game at one with 1:16 to go.
Â
Just after the expiration of the Cornell penalty, Woods again got the puck on the right wing and again went one-on-one with DaSilva. Woods made a move but didn't get the shot off, drawing DaSilva out of position and slotting home the game-winning goal into the empty left side of the net with 21 seconds to go.
Â
Woods had several other close calls on DaSilva on the night, including a chance at a breakaway in the first period, but DaSilva came out of the net to knock the puck away. In addition, after the Big Red killed off a 5-on-3 to open the second period, Woods got a chance on the other end, going in on DaSilva and tried to sneak the puck inside the left post.
Â
Cornell drew a penalty midway through the second, and a shot from sophomore defenseman
Sydnee Saracco low in the right faceoff circle almost found its way past DaSilva. The Big Red gained momentum from the power play and quickly got off another round of shots, including one that left a rebound loose, causing a scramble in front before DaSilva could cover up.
Â
Saracco had back-to-back shots from the point on another man-advantage opportunity late in the second period. The first was redirected wide and DaSilva smothered the next. Junior
Brianna Veerman drew another Princeton penalty 25 seconds remaining in the second when she skated in on DaSilva only to be taken down by a Tigers defender. The series of power plays helped Cornell to a 14-4 shot advantage in the second period.
Â
Junior goaltender
Paula Voorheis had 20 saves in the win.
Cornell faces another ranked opponent Saturday when it heads to No. 7/7 Quinnipiac for a 4 p.m. ECAC Hockey contest.
