ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team wound up in fourth place at the 2015 ECAC Division I Women's Indoor Tennis Championships on Sunday after a 4-0 loss to Princeton in the third-place match at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell (1-5) was the sixth seed coming into the tournament, exceeding that ranking thanks to a Friday quarterfinal upset of third-seeded Yale. Top-seeded Princeton, which is also ranked 54th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, finished third thanks to the victory over the Big Red.
The Tigers clawed out the doubles point in dramatic fashion, with the third and final match going to a tiebreaker. The Big Red tandem of
Marika Cusick and
Alexandra D'Ascenzo kicked off play with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot, but Princeton fought back by winning the No. 1 match. That put the balance of the opening point on the No. 3 position, where Cornell's team of
Priyanka Shah and
Jane Stewart fought all the way to a 7-6(4) defeat.
Princeton then clinched the match with three straight-set victories in singles, the Shah and Stewart were winning their respective matches and
Lizzie Stewart was within striking distance in the third set of her match at No. 3.
Cornell will remain idle next weekend before returning to play Feb. 21-22 with a road trip to Army and Maryland.
