RICHMOND, Va. – Senior
Spencer Scorza hit a two-run home run and classmate
Kevin Tatum extended his hitting streak to eight games on Tuesday, but the baseball team dropped a 23-7 non-league game at Richmond.
Â
Scheduled to play six games in a stretch of four days, Cornell (6-13) had three pitchers make their collegiate debuts on the mound against Richmond (14-8) — two of which are primarily position players.
Â
The Big Red's first runs came on Scorza's first homer of the season and fourth of his Cornell career, which came with two out in the third inning to score senior
JD Whetsel after his leadoff single. Whetsel then led off the fifth with a double down the left-field line, then scored on senior
Ryan Karl's sacrifice fly.
Â
Cornell's sixth run came from freshman
Pierre Le Dorze, who hit a pinch-hit triple and scored on Scorza's single to right. It was Scorza's third RBI on the day and 14th of the season, which is tied for the team lead with Tatum after his two-run single in the eighth. Karl drove in the Big Red's final run with his second walk of the day, scoring Le Dorze.
Â
Cornell continues its road trip at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Towson.
