EMMITSBURG, Md. – Cornell scored all 13 of its runs in the first four innings and was able to slow down Mount St. Mary's just enough to score a 13-8 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Meadows Field. The Big Red improved its win streak to four, its longest in a full year, to move to 8-10 on the season.
The Big Red scored five runs in the first, three apiece in the second and third and two more in the fourth and threatened all evening. The Big Red had 13 hits and had 21 base runners before the game was called due to rain in the top of the sixth inning with one out and two runners on for the visitors.
Emily Weinberg,
Meg Parker,
Michiko McGivney and
Jessica Bigbie all had multi-hit games for Cornell, with both Weinberg and Parker scoring three times. Freshman
Karlie Mellott was 1-for-3 with two talks and two runs scored, extending her hit streak to 15 games to begin her career.
Sophie Giaquinto hit a two-run homer in the fourth. In all, nine different players had hits as the Big Red reached double digits on the scoreboard for the fourth straight game, the first time that has happened since 1998.
The freshman combo of
Sierra Stone and
Maddie Orcutt were lights out in relief, shutting down the Mounties over the final 2.1 innings. The tandem allowed just one hit over that span after the home team struck for eight runs and eight hits over the first 2.2 innings.
The second game was washed out.
