ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman
Lizzie Stewart won both singles and doubles matches on Sunday, but the women's tennis team was dealt a 4-3 loss by Yale at Heyman-Cullman Tennis Center.
Even with the loss and just one year removed from a winless Ivy League season, Cornell (9-7, 3-2 Ivy) will enter the final weekend of its regular season with a chance to earn a share of the league title — but only if both Cornell and Columbia can sweep Penn and Princeton in their matches next weekend.
The Big Red started off by winning the doubles point. Sophomore
Alexandra D'Ascenzo and junior
Dena Tanenbaum teamed up for a decisive 8-2 decision from the No. 1 position, and the freshman team of
Priyanka Shah and
Lizzie Stewart moved to a perfect 7-0 on the season with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot.
Stewart (No. 4) and sophomore
Marika Cusick (No. 3) went on to notch singles victories in straight sets. Just one of the six singles tilts required a third set, with 75th-ranked Yale (8-9, 2-2) coming out on top to eventual a non-league loss to Cornell earlier this season.
Cornell will host its final regular-season match at 2 p.m. Friday against Penn at Reis Tennis Center.
