(PDF)ITHACA, N.Y. --- A pair of penalty kicks, one per side, left the score of Sunday's men's soccer game at Berman Field knotted at one at the end of regulation. The Big Red capitalized on an Air Force mistake in overtime to earn their first win of the season, 2-1, and the CU Inaria Cup title.
Much like Cornell's first game of the CU Inaria Classic on Friday, the opposition was awarded a penalty kick early in the second half, but this time, Air Force was able to make it count, taking a 1-0 lead. And much like Friday's game, a red card was issued late in the second half, but this time, the call went Cornell's way and the Falcons' Cameron Duley was sent off. Duley's offense occurred within his own 18-yard box, meaning it was the Big Red's turn to head to the penalty stripe. Junior
Madison Heck slipped it past Air Force goalkeeper John Wendt to even the score in the 81
st minute.
With a man advantage, Cornell continued to attack in overtime. In the 96
th minute, Heck took a free kick, sending the ball into the box and off the head of an Air Force defender into the back of the net for an own goal.
After a relatively even first half, the Big Red offense seemed to come to life in the second half. Heck sent a free kick just high early in the frame and bounced another try off the post. In the 78
th minute, junior
Chris St. Germain settled a
Ryan Watters throw-in and blasted a shot just inches wide.
Freshman goalkeeper
Rhys Moller also came up big in the 72
nd minute, saving a header that was undoubtedly the Falcons best scoring chance in the flow of play. Moller made five saves in his first collegiate win.
With Cornell's draw with Duquesne and win over Air Force, the Big Red picked up four points and captured the CU Inaria Cup crown for the fourth time in five years. Duquesne also picked up four points and was tied with Cornell in head-to-head play and goal differential. The Big Red earned the tournament title, then, based on goals for, with two to Duquesne's one.
For his goal, the part he played in the game-winning tally and his offensive contributions throughout the tournament, Heck was named the tournament's Offensive MVP.
Rhys Moller, who recorded his first career clean sheet and first win in the tournament was named the Defensive MVP. Cornell placed four other players on the All-Tournament Team.
