ITHACA, N.Y. -- The eighth-ranked Cornell wrestling team one-upped the Big Red hockey team, winning two matches on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden to sweep the Grapple at the Garden. The Big Red improved to 3-0 on the season with a 39-0 win over Hofstra and a 28-10 triumph over No. 10 Rutgers. Cornell hockey got the weekend started on Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire to make the Big Red a perfect 3-0 on the weekend at the World's Most Famous Arena.
The Big Red's win over Rutgers avenged last season's dual meet loss to the Scarlet Knights and came on the heels of a momentum-building shutout of the Pride, its third shutout of Hofstra since 2011.
Sophomore
Brandon Womack continued his tremendous start with a pair of second period falls at 165 pounds, pinning Hofstra's Bobby Fehr in 3:50 and Willie Scott of Rutgers in 4:40. His win against Scott gave Cornell a 12-10 lead and was the first of five straight Cornell victories to end the dual. The 18-point win was Cornell's largest over a ranked team since topping No. 16 Virginia Tech 34-0 in February of 2014.
Senior
Gabe Dean was his usual dominant self, earning a 33 second fall over Hofstra's Mike Oxley before a just as impressive 16-3 major decision over 13th-ranked Nicholas Gravina in the nightcap. Dean shook off a 3-3 tie to score 13 straight points in the third, including 10 on nearfalls. His win over Gravina gives him 125 career wins in a Big Red singlet, good for ninth all-time.
Noah Baughman (125),
Mark Grey (133),
Brian Realbuto (174),
Ben Honis (197) and
Jeramy Sweany (285) all were 2-0 on the day, while each of the 10 wrestlers in the lineup had at least one victory. Sophomore WIll Koll had an impressive afternoon with a 9-4 win over Connor Burkert of Hofstra and a narrow 6-4 loss to two-time All-American Anthony Ashnault at 141.
