STONY BROOK, N.Y. – It was exactly two years ago today that the Big Red women's basketball team last played a double-overtime contest, as a step-back trey at the buzzer by
Nia Marshall eventually led to a 90-87 win over Vermont. This afternoon at Stony Brook, it looked like history might repeat itself as Marshall knocked down a trey from the corner to send Cornell and the Seawolves into a second overtime stanza at Pritchard Gymnasium. Unfortunately for the Big Red, a single made free throw by Aailyah Worley with 3.2 seconds to play proved to be the difference as Stony Brook took the 66-65 victory.
After trading big leads early in the contest, neither team led by more than four points over the final 28:44 of the contest. All told, there were 14 lead changes and 10 ties as both teams overcame brutally slow starts that saw Cornell take a slim 18-17 lead into halftime. The loss snaps a 14-game winning streak for the Big Red when leading at the intermission.
Marshall finished the game with the Big Red's first double-double of the season, and the 11th of her career, as she registered season highs in points (25) and rebounds (10). Senior guard
Megan LeDuc and freshman guard
Samantha Widmann finished with 12 points apiece, with LeDuc pulling down six rebounds.
Kerri Moran chipped in eight points and
Caroline Shelquist was a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range, knocking down a trey at the halftime buzzer and at the end of regulation to send the game into its first overtime.
Stony Brook (6-6) was led by Kori Bayne-Walker's 25 points, while Davion Wingate chipped in 11.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, as Cornell hit on 28 percent overall and 36.5 percent from 3-point range, while the Seawolves connected at a 27.3 percent clip overall and a mere 20 percent from beyond the arc. Both team's finished near 40 percent from the floor, with Cornell ending the game at 39.7 percent overall (25-63), while SB closed the contest at 38.6 percent (22-57). The Seawolves hit four extra 3-pointers, despite shooting just 30 percent (9-30), and had three extra made free throws (13-of-17) to earn the win.
Both teams had 39 rebounds and Stony Brook had one more turnover than the Big Red (17).
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with Cornell hitting just 4-of-13 shots in the first quarter, while Stony Brook connected on just 2-of-11. Still, the visitors built a small 9-6 lead at the first break thanks to five points from Marshall and a layup at the buzzer from Moran.
LeDuc knocked down a step-back trey at the end of a shot clock to open Cornell's scoring in the second quarter and double up the home team, 12-6, before a traditional three-point play by Marshall pushed the visitor's advantage to its largest of the game at nine points (15-6) and forced Stony Brook to call a timeout.
The Seawolves got its first field goal of the second quarter with a trey from Jerell Matthews at the 6:02 mark, opening up an 11-0 run for the home team to take a 17-15 lead with less than a minute to go in the quarter. Cornell called a time out and head coach
Dayna Smith sent Shelquist into the game for the first time and the sophomore guard immediately knocked down a trey to put Cornell back up by one-point, 18-17, at the half.
Stony Brook opened the third quarter with consecutive treys to take its biggest lead of the contest (23-18) at the 8:44 mark. The teams traded baskets before a fast break layup from Moran opened an 8-0 run to put the Big Red back up, 28-25 with 2:14 remaining in the stanza.
Worley hit a trey on the Seawolves next trip down the court to knot the game at 28-28 and after a Cornell miss, Bayne-Walker hit a trey to put the home team back up, 31-28. A traditional three-point play by Widmann tied the game once more, but a 3-pointer by Christa Scognamiglio sent Stony Brook into the final break with the 34-31 lead.
The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before five straight points by Widmann, including a traditional three-point play, followed by two made free throws from LeDuc put the Big Red up, 44-41, with 4:11 to play.
The Seawolves closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to go up, 50-47, with :11 to play but once again, Shelquist checked into the game and knocked down a huge 3-pointer to knot the game at 50-50 with five ticks remaining in regulation. On Stony Brook's next possession, LeDuc and
Maddy Reed converged on Bayne-Walker to force a bad shot and Marshall pulled down the rebound to send the teams to overtime.
Marshall converted a tough layup to open the extra stanza and LeDuc knocked down an elbow jumper to put Cornell up, 54-50, but Stony Brook responded with seven unanswered points to take a 57-54 lead with 10 seconds to play. Amazingly, the Big Red knocked down another 3-pointer, this one coming from Marshall in the corner, to send the teams to a second overtime.
Once again Cornell got out to a lead, going up 65-62 with 1:30 to play before a trey from Wingate tied the game at 65-65 with 27 seconds left in the contest. Cornell had a chance to win, but the Big Red's shot was off the mark and a foul on the other end sent Worley to the foul line, where she converted 1-of-2 to give Stony Brook the 66-65 victory.
The Big Red opens the New Year at Binghamton when it travels down to Vestal to take on the Bearcats on Sunday, Jan. 1 at 2 p.m.
