NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Victories against Drexel and George Washington bookended a loss to Stanford this weekend for the women's squash team at the Yale Round Robin. Sophomore
Margaux Losty won all three of her matches from the No. 3 position for Cornell (6-4).
The results essentially fall in line with the College Squash Association's rankings, where the Big Red entered the weekend tabbed eighth — which is in line for the final spot in the season-ending Howe Cup national championships. Cornell defended that position with Saturday morning's 7-2 victory over ninth-ranked Drexel. The Big Red swept the opening rotation, and victories by
Sydney Francis (No. 8) and
Rachel Scherman (No. 2) clinched the match. Scherman's victory featured a 12-10 finish in a fifth and deciding set, as did
Emma Uible's triumph at No. 4.
The Big Red then won all three matches in the top third of the order against rival Stanford on Saturday afternoon, though it ended up suffering a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the fourth-ranked Cardinal. Three of the matches went to five sets, including Losty's marathon match in the opening rotation capped off by a 14-12 score in the finale. Scherman won her No. 2 match in three, and sophomore Michèle Garceau rallied to win the No. 1 match in four sets.
Cornell then wrapped up the trip with a 6-3 victory over 13th-ranked George Washington on Sunday. The Big Red had two victories in each rotation and was particularly dominant toward the bottom of the order. Freshmen
Lauren Leizman (No. 8) and
Hannah Scherl (No. 9) won their respective matches in three sets, as did Losty (No. 3) and
Charlotte Knaggs (No. 5).
The Big Red returns home to resume Ivy League play next weekend, hosting Dartmouth at noon Saturday and Harvard at 11 a.m. Sunday. Cornell then wraps up the weekend by playing William Smith at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
