PHILADELPHIA —
David Volfson,
Colin Sinclair and
Chris Vrabel each won both their singles and doubles matches, and the men's tennis team got off to a strong start at the ECAC Indoor Championships with a 4-1 victory over St. John's at Hecht Tennis Center. The win broke a five-match losing skid for Cornell (2-5), which is currently ranked 60th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and it ends a seven-match winning streak for St. John's (8-2).
Sinclair's 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 2 singles came against Lucas Hehjal, who entered the weekend ranked 92nd. Volfson had an easier straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, having earlier paired with Sinclair to win a 6-4 match at No. 1 doubles against a St. John's pairing which was also recently nationally ranked.
Vrabel started the day paired with
Bernardo Casares Rosa to win a No. 2 doubles match, then later won his No. 4 singles match in straight sets.
Cornell will next play at 3 p.m. Saturday against Harvard. The tournament's top seed, the Crimson is tied for 32nd in the national rankings with North Carolina State. Harvard (7-3) split matches last weekend in Tennessee against #37 Memphis (6-1 loss) and #27 Vanderbilt (4-3 win). The Crimson defeated eighth-seeded Yale, 4-1, in yesterday's first round.
Cornell is one of eight competing teams in the annual event, which features four nationally ranked teams. The Big Red last won the ECAC tournament in 2013, which was also the last time it was staged at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
