NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The men's squash team finished in second place at the Hoehn Cup on Sunday after a 5-4 loss to Drexel in the championship match at Brady Squash Center.
While the loss broke a six-match winning streak for Cornell (9-9), the Big Red still has not suffered a losing season in the 12-year tenure of
Mark Devoy as the James Broadhead '57 Head Coach of Squash. The Big Red will likely be placed 10th in the final College Squash Association national rankings, which is an improvement of one position since last year.
All four of the Big Red's points on Sunday came from competitors who went undefeated in their three respective matches over the weekend at the CSA's national championship 'B' flight for teams ranked ninth through 16th.
Once again, the bottom of the order was particular strong for the Big Red, with the team racking up a cumulative record of 39-15 in matches from the Nos. 7, 8 and 9 positions this season. Freshmen
Ben Francis and
Alex Jung both won in three sets from the bottom two spots, and senior co-captain
Graham Dietz won in four from the No. 7 spot. After winning in five sets on Friday and Saturday, freshman
Andy Muran needed just four sets to dispatch of his opponent from Drexel.
