Women's Tennis Falls To #43 Princeton, 4-1

HANOVER, N.H. — The women's tennis team won the doubles point for a second straight day, but couldn't build on the momentum en route to a 4-1 loss to Princeton on Saturday at the ECAC Indoor Championships at Dartmouth's Boss Tennis Center.

Princeton, ranked 43rd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the start of the week before its upset loss to Harvard yesterday, won the first doubles match to be completed at the No. 3 position. Cornell (2-3) battled back with sophomores Priyanka Shah and Lizzie Stewart winning, 6-3, at No. 2. Juniors Marika Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo clinched the match's opening point with a 6-4 triumph at No. 1.

Cornell (2-2) won the doubles point to start the day. Making her collegiate dual debut, freshman Mariko Iinuma paired with sophomore Madison Stevens to win the No. 3 match, 6-3. After 54th-ranked Brown (3-1) won the No. 2 match, the Big Red's No. 1 pairing of juniors Marika Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo clinched the point with a 6-4 victory.

Princeton — the defending Ivy League champion — went on to take control in singles, winning four matches in straight sets to clinch the match.

Cornell will return home for the final 11 matches of its non-league schedule, starting with matches against Connecticut at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Albany at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
