Â
THE MATCHUP: After three consecutive road games, the Big Red field hockey team returns to the cozy confines of Marsha Dodson Field for its toughest test to date, as it welcomes No. 14 Stanford for a rare midday game on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. The teams last faced each other exactly 14 years ago when Cornell defeated the Cardinal, 4-1, on Sept. 13, 2002, on Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
Â
THE SERIES WITH STANFORD: Cornell and Stanford have played just three times, with the first meeting coming in 1991, a 5-1 win for the Cardinal in Palo Alto. Stanford made it two in a row with a 2-1 home win in 2000, but Cornell earned a 4-1 victory the next season in Ithaca.
Â
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL: No. 14 Stanford enters the game with a deceptive 1-4 record on the year. All four losses have come against nationally ranked opponents, with three coming by just one goal, and the fourth was a two-goal loss at No. 1 Syracuse on Sunday. Jessica Welch leads the team with three goals and six points, while Kristina Bassi and Marissa Cicione have added two goals apiece. In goal, Kelsey Bing has played nearly every minute and has posted a 2.22 goals-against average while saving .688 percent of the shots she's faced.
Â
LAST TIME VS. STANFORD: The Big Red made the most of its chances on Sept. 13, 2002, scoring three goals off penalty corners in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and post a 4-1 season-opening victory over Stanford. Sophomore Stephanie Maher tallied the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner, and senior captain Sarah Nordstrom earned three assists. Just minutes after coming into the contest in the first half, senior Annie O'Rourke took a pass from junior Lindsay Grace and placed it to the left corner of the goal past Cardinal goaltender Emily Zander from 10 yards out to give Cornell a 1-0 lead. After Big Red goaltender Kaitlin Tierney stopped a penalty stoke by Tysie Sawyer with just over five minutes remaining before the half, the Cardinal continued to put on the pressure and were rewarded with a game-tying score by Amrit Chima. After being outshot in the first half 7-2, the Big Red were able to get the ball into the Stanford zone and create chances in the second stanza. Nearly ten minutes after the second half began, the Big Red scored what would be the game-winner on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Junior Carissa Mirasol sent the ball to Nordstrom, who set up Maher's first goal of the contest. The Cornell offense would strike again to increase the lead to two goals just under eight minutes later, as the Mirasol-Nordstrom-Maher combination worked to perfection off another corner. On Cornell's fourth goal of the afternoon, Nordstrom earned her third assist of the day by setting up junior Kimmy Gardner on a corner with 9:16 remaining in the contest. Tierney had an outstanding day in goal, saving all but one of the 12 shots she faced. Zander and Ana Kralovec combined to make three saves for Stanford.
Â
VS. THE AMERICA EAST: Cornell is 7-13 all-time against the current members of the America East, with three victories coming against Albany (3-6), two against Maine (2-3) and one each against Cal (1-1), and Stanford (1-2). The Big Red is winless against Fairfield (0-1) and Vermont (0-3), but has never faced UC Davis, UMass-Lowell, New Hampshire or the University of the Pacific in field hockey … Coach Hornibrook is 2-11 all-time against the America East.

Â
KNOCK THREE TIMES: When the Big Red fell to Penn, 4-3, on Sept. 21, 2013 it marked only the fourth time in Coach Hornibrook's career with Cornell that the team scored three goals and lost the contest. Under Coach Hornibrook, the Big Red has won 72-of-76 games in which it scores at least three goals, a mark that was raised when it defeated Lehigh (4-0) on Sept. 4.
Â
EARLY LEADS: Scoring first has been a big part of the Big Red's success in recent years. Since Coach Hornibrook has taken over the program, Cornell has posted an impressive 97-14 record in games in which they have scored first. Conversely, the team has won only 15 games in which they have had to come back from an early deficit to win. The first was Coach Hornibrook's very first victory with the team, a 6-3 win over Lehigh in 2004, with the latest coming on Nov. 7, 2015 as Cornell overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Dartmouth, 5-4, in overtime.
Â
CLOSE CALLS: Cornell's 2-1 victory over Ohio University on Sept. 9 continued the Big Red's trend of playing in one-goal games. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Big Red has lost 66 games, with 40 of those coming by a single goal, including 18 in overtime. During that same span, Cornell has won 91 games, with 44 coming in one-goal games, including 12 in overtime.

Cornell finished the 2015 season with a record of 11-6 overall and a mark of 5-2 in the Ivy League, good for second place in the conference standings. Of its six losses, four came to nationally ranked teams that made the NCAA tournament field, including three that finished in the top 10 of the RPI. Additionally, the Big Red's 11 wins tied the school record for victories in a season, previously set three times (2008, 2010, 2014), and the team set new school standards for points (147), goals (50) and assists (57).
