Highlights

TEANECK, N.J. — The women's soccer team's Ivy League season got off to a rocky start on Friday night with Columbia securing a 2-0 victory at University Stadium on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson.

Amaris Hemmings scored in the eighth minute for Columbia (3-4-2, 1-0 Ivy), beating her defender wide on the right side before lobbing a shot over the goalkeeper on an angle from just inside the 18-yard box.

Cornell (3-5, 0-1 Ivy) gradually gained some momentum by the latter stages of the half. In the 40th minute, freshman midfielder Juliana Comer won the ball in the Big Red's half of the field, then made a run through the middle third before sending a penetrating pass through the back line. Freshman Kennedy Yearby was first to the ball and her shot beat the charging goalkeeper, but the ball bounced just wide of the far post.

The run of play continued in the Big Red's favor early in the second half with Comer again in the mix. Right at the 52-minute mark, she got a boot to a bouncing ball in the box from about 15 yards that once again went wide.

The Lions took a strangehold of the game at the 68-minute mark on Natalie Neshat's goal, a left-footed effort from 25 yards that sailed into the upper far corner of the net.

Cornell returns to non-league action at 1 p.m. Sunday at Central Connecticut State.
