Men's Tennis Starts Fast With Wins vs. Buffalo, Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team got its dual season off to a flying start on Thursday with a pair of dominating wins against non-league visitors to Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red won all six singles matches to start the day with a 6-1 victory over Buffalo, then later swept Binghamton, 7-0.

Cornell used identical lineups in both matches, including a host of newcomers. Freshman Lev Kazakov topped the singles lineup while teaming with classmate Joe McAllister in No. 3 doubles. Kazakov won both of his singles matches in straight sets, topping Buffalo's Vidit Vaghela in a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the match against the Bulls. Junior Daniel Grunberger, who transferred to the Big Red from Columbia, and freshman Pietro Rimondini both swept singles matches from the middle of the order. In doubles, freshman Rohan Sikka teamed with senior Colin Sinclair at the No. 2 spot, earning a victory against the Bearcats.

Cornell's incumbents had fairly comfortable victories in singles. The senior trio of 62th-ranked Chris Vrabel (No. 2), Colin Sinclair (No. 3) and Bernardo Casares Rosa (No. 6) each won both of their singles matches in straight sets, and Casares Rosa and Vrabel were 2-for-2 from the top doubles position.

The Big Red is next in action with two neutral-site matches in Cambridge, Mass. Cornell will take on BYU on Saturday, Jan. 28, then tangle with Tennessee at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29.
